Disney+ (say Disney Plus) is a popular online streaming service from The Walt Disney Company. It lets you watch movies and TV shows whenever you want, like a huge digital library.
The service mainly offers films and TV series made by Disney's own studios. You can find content from famous brands like Marvel, National Geographic, Pixar, and Star Wars. Disney+ also creates its own new movies and TV shows just for the platform.
Disney+ first launched on November 12, 2019, in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. It quickly expanded to Australia, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico a week later. More countries in Europe and Latin America are getting Disney+ in the future.
Contents
What You Can Watch
Disney+ is filled with content from Disney's main entertainment studios. This includes Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Lucasfilm (for Star Wars), Marvel Studios, and National Geographic. You can also find some movies from 20th Century Studios.
Disney+ focuses on family-friendly entertainment. This means you won't find any movies or shows rated R or TV-MA here. Another streaming service called Hulu, which Disney also owns, offers more general entertainment.
A Huge Library of Fun
Disney+ is expected to have about 7,000 TV episodes and 500 films. This includes content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, 20th Century Studios, and National Geographic. You can also watch original TV series and films from Disney Channel and Freeform.
Some of the first Disney movies from theaters to stream only on Disney+ were Captain Marvel, Dumbo (2019), and Avengers: Endgame. Disney plans to eventually have its entire movie collection on Disney+, including films that used to be in the "Disney Vault".
All the main Star Wars films were available when Disney+ launched. More recent ones like The Last Jedi and Solo were added soon after.
Most of the movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe were also ready to watch when the service began.
New Shows and Movies
Disney+ is creating many new shows based on Marvel characters and Star Wars. For Marvel, there are new TV series like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, and an animated What If series.
For Star Wars, there's The Mandalorian, a show set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. There's also a show about Cassian Andor from Rogue One, a new season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Kenobi starring Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Disney plans to spend a lot of money creating these exciting new shows and movies.
Real-Life Stories and Documentaries
Disney+ also offers original factual TV shows. These shows aim to share inspiring stories and spark curiosity. Some are related to Disney properties, like behind-the-scenes documentaries about Disney studios, or a cooking competition called Be Our Chef.
Marvel's Hero Project shows inspiring kids who do brave and kind things. The Imagineering Story is a documentary series about how Disney theme parks are designed and built. National Geographic also produces shows like Magic of the Animal Kingdom, which follows animal caretakers at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
How to Watch Disney+
You can watch Disney+ on many different devices. This includes web browsers on computers, iOS devices (like iPhones and iPads), Android phones and tablets, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, and Chromebook.
You can also watch on smart TVs from Samsung and LG, and gaming consoles like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Disney+ has features to make it easy for everyone to watch. These include closed captioning (text for dialogue), Descriptive Video Service (audio that describes what's happening on screen), and audio navigation.
You can set up to seven different profiles on one account. You can also stream on four devices at the same time. You can even download content to watch offline later. Many shows and movies are available in super clear 4K Ultra HD with amazing sound like Dolby Atmos.
When Did Disney+ Launch?
Disney+ is being released around the world in different stages. It first launched in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands on November 12, 2019.
A week later, on November 19, 2019, it became available in Australia, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico. Disney+ then launched in many European countries like the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, and Ireland on March 24, 2020. More countries in Europe and Latin America will get Disney+ in late 2020 and 2021.
Important Notices
For some older Disney movies like Dumbo, The Jungle Book, and Peter Pan, Disney+ adds a message. This message explains that some scenes might show cultural stereotypes that could be seen as offensive today. There is also a notice for titles that show tobacco.
