The Mandalorian, also called Star Wars: The Mandalorian, is an American science-fiction and space Western television show. It was created by filmmaker Jon Favreau for the Disney+ streaming service. It is the very first live-action television series set in the vast Star Wars universe.
The story takes place five years after the movie Return of the Jedi (1983). It follows a quiet, armored warrior and bounty hunter named Din Djarin. While traveling the outer rim of the galaxy, he finds a mysterious alien toddler named Grogu. Instead of handing the child over to dangerous villains, Din chooses to protect him.
The series stars Pedro Pascal as the lead character. It premiered when Disney+ launched on November 12, 2019. The show was a massive hit around the world and ran for three full seasons with 24 total episodes. His mission is to track down a target known only as "The Child". Din discovers that the target is a small, green infant who can use the Force. Although he delivers the baby at first, Din has a change of heart. He rescues the child, whom fans nicknamed "Baby Yoda" and who is later revealed to be named Grogu.
Together, the two travel across space in Din's starship, the Razor Crest. Din searches for Grogu's people, the Jedi, while running from Imperial warlord Moff Gideon. Along the way, Din learns what it means to be a true parent and protector.

Season 3 (2023)
After being reunited during the events of The Book of Boba Fett, Din and Grogu travel together again. Because Din removed his helmet, his clan considers him an outcast. To redeem himself, Din travels to the ruined surface of Mandalore to bathe in the Living Waters beneath the planet's mines.
Din and Bo-Katan work together to bring different Mandalorian clans together. They discover that Moff Gideon has built a secret Imperial base on Mandalore. The Mandalorians fight together, defeat Gideon, and reclaim their homeworld. Din formally adopts Grogu as his apprentice, Din Grogu.
Behind the Scenes and Production History
How the Show Was Created
Star Wars creator George Lucas had tried to make a live-action television show called Underworld as early as 2009. However, making movie-quality special effects for television was too expensive at the time. After the Walt Disney Company bought Lucasfilm in 2012, plans began for a new streaming service.
In 2017, director Jon Favreau pitched his idea for a space Western about a lone Mandalorian gunslinger to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Kennedy connected Favreau with Dave Filoni, who had created the popular animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Favreau and Filoni combined their ideas.
Filoni drew a sketch of a baby from Yoda's species, which became Grogu. Disney officially announced the series in 2018. The show was designed with a diverse team of talented directors, including Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, Taika Waititi, and Rick Famuyiwa.
