David Filoni (born June 7, 1974) is an American director, producer, and writer. He is best known for his amazing work on many Star Wars animated and live-action shows. He helped create popular characters like Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex.

Filoni started his career working on shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender. Later, he was hired by George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, to help bring new Star Wars stories to life. He has been a key creative mind behind shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and The Mandalorian. Today, he is a top creative officer at Lucasfilm, helping guide the future of Star Wars.

Early Life and School

Dave Filoni was born in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, on June 7, 1974. His dad loved opera and classical music. This helped Dave learn to appreciate classical music too. He even used this love to help choose music for Star Wars shows.

Filoni also shared that his grandfather and uncle were pilots. His uncle even fixed old planes. This family history with planes inspired him when he created the show Star Wars Resistance. He finished high school in 1992 and then went to Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1996.

Starting His Career

Before joining Lucasfilm Animation, Filoni worked on many other cartoons. He was a storyboard artist, which means he drew pictures for how scenes would look. He also worked as an assistant director.

Some of the shows he helped with include King of the Hill, Teamo Supremo, and Kim Possible. He then became a director for many episodes of the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Working on Star Wars

Dave Filoni is a huge Star Wars fan! He especially loves the character Plo Koon, a wise Jedi Master. He even dressed up as Plo Koon for the movie premiere of Revenge of the Sith.

George Lucas himself offered Filoni a job to help create a new Star Wars animated series. Filoni later said he thought it was a prank at first! His office is full of Plo Koon stuff, showing how much he loves the character. He even has a model of Appa from Avatar: The Last Airbender on his desk.

Producing and Directing

In 2008, Filoni directed the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated movie. He also became the main director for the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV show. He helped shape the stories and characters, making it a fan favorite.

Filoni also helped create Star Wars Rebels, which started in 2014. He was an executive producer and supervising director for the first two seasons. He later oversaw all future Lucasfilm Animation projects. He returned as supervising director for the final season of Rebels.

In 2019, Filoni teamed up with Jon Favreau to create The Mandalorian. This was a live-action Star Wars show for Disney+. Filoni is an executive producer and helps guide the story. He even directed the first episode of the show! He has also worked as an executive producer on other Star Wars shows like The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew. In 2023, it was announced that Filoni will write and direct a new Star Wars movie. This movie will connect the stories from these TV shows.

Moving Up at Lucasfilm

In 2021, Lucasfilm announced that Filoni had been promoted. He became an executive producer and executive creative director for the studio. This meant he had a bigger role in guiding Star Wars projects.

In November 2023, he was promoted again to Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm. This is a very important job where he helps decide the creative direction for all Star Wars movies and shows.

Voice Acting

Dave Filoni has also lent his voice to some characters in the shows he works on. He voiced the bounty hunter Embo and the droid CH-33P ("Cheep") in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

In Star Wars Rebels, he voiced the grumpy astromech droid Chopper. Fans didn't know this until the very end of the show! He also voiced Chopper in Star Wars Forces of Destiny and Star Wars: The Bad Batch.

Acting in Live-Action

Filoni also made his acting debut in The Mandalorian. He played an X-Wing pilot named Trapper Wolf. He appeared in a few episodes, flying his X-Wing and helping out the main characters.
