Dave the Barbarian is a fun animated TV show created by Doug Langdale for Disney Channel. It's all about a strong but scared barbarian named Dave and his quirky family. They live in a medieval world but often deal with modern problems! The series first aired on January 23, 2004, and finished on January 22, 2005. It had one season with 21 episodes.

What's the Show About?

The story takes place in the kingdom of Udrogoth during the Middle Ages. The main character is Dave (voiced by Danny Cooksey), who is a very strong barbarian. But he's also quite a coward! He prefers knitting and cooking over fighting monsters.

Dave lives with his family:

Dave's parents, King Throktar and Queen Glimia, are away fighting evil around the world. They left Candy in charge as Princess Regent. Dave is supposed to protect the kingdom because he's the biggest. But it's usually the whole family who ends up defending Udrogoth from the silly villain, The Dark Lord Chuckles the Silly Piggy (Paul Rugg).

A Narrator (voiced by Jeff Bennett) tells the story. He can even talk to the characters in the show! Sometimes, the characters talk back to him. This is called "breaking the fourth wall," meaning they know they are in a TV show.

Meet the Characters

Main Characters

  • Dave (voiced by Danny Cooksey): He's 16 and the middle child. Dave is super strong but very sensitive to pain. He'd rather do hobbies like knitting and cooking than fight. He's scared of many things and often shrieks in a high-pitched way. He's also allergic to many things! His catchphrases are "Bajabbers!" and "Please don't hurt me!"
  • Candy (voiced by Erica Luttrell): She's 17 and the oldest. Candy is in charge while her parents are away. She acts like a modern "valley girl" and loves shopping and hanging out. Candy is skilled in martial arts. She can be a bit selfish, but she always helps her family when it matters.
  • Fang (voiced by Tress MacNeille): At 9, she's the youngest. Fang is wild and loves to break things. She has long red hair. People often mistake her for a monkey, which she hates! Her catchphrase is "Not a monkey!" Even though she wants to be a tough barbarian princess, she secretly likes playing with dolls. Fang uses a spear in fights.
  • Oswidge (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson): He's Dave, Fang, and Candy's uncle. He's a clumsy sorcerer whose spells often cause more trouble than help. He loves to eat and looks a bit messy. Like Fang, he secretly enjoys playing with dolls. He knows a lot about magic, even if he's not great at using it.
  • Faffy (voiced by Frank Welker): The family's pet dragon. He looks like a pig and breathes lightning instead of fire! He's very friendly and not very smart.
  • Lula (voiced by Estelle Harris): Dave's talking, magical sword. She's often impatient and sarcastic. She can shoot lightning from her tip. Lula used to belong to a hero named Argon the Ageless.

Other Characters

  • King Throktar and Queen Glimia (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson and Erica Luttrell): Dave's parents and the real rulers of Udrogoth. They are off fighting evil but can talk to their kids using Oswidge's magic crystal ball.
  • The Narrator/Storyteller (voiced by Jeff Bennett): The voice who tells the story. He's never seen but often interacts with the characters.
  • Dinky and Cheezette (voiced by Erica Luttrell and Tress MacNeille): Princess Candy's best friends. They also love fashion and social events.
  • Mrs. Gert Bogmelon (voiced by Lisa Kaplan): A witch-like shopkeeper who loves money. She sells strange and magical items.
  • Twinkle The Marvel Horse (voiced by Jeff Bennett): A magical pony with a rainbow tail. He's often gloomy and has some unusual ideas. He can fly even without wings!

The Bad Guys

  • The Dark Lord Chuckles the Silly Piggy (voiced by Paul Rugg): A pig who wears a fancy cape and wants to rule Udrogoth. He has a magic amulet that gives him powers like moving things with his mind and changing his shape. His plans are often silly, like using giant clams or evil pastries. When he gets hurt, he says, "Ooh, my little piggy [body part]!"
  • Malsquando (voiced by Rob Paulsen): An evil sorcerer and Oswidge's rival. He wants to take over the world and make money.
  • Quosmir (voiced by Michael McShane): The god of freshly laundered trousers and other silly things. He looks like a giant green snake-man. He often forgets things and gets distracted easily. He feels bad about himself, especially around his mom.
  • Princess Irmaplotz and Queen Zonthara (voiced by Melissa Rivers and Joan Rivers): Irmaplotz is an evil sorceress princess who tries to make Dave's life miserable. Her mom, Zonthara, is the ruler of Hyrogoth and wants Irmaplotz to be more evil. Dave and Irmaplotz once liked each other, but Dave broke up with her. She still might have feelings for him!
  • Ned Frischman (voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz): A nerdy guy from 1994. He finds a magic zipper that lets him travel back in time. He tries to conquer the world using future technology like video games.

How the Show Was Made

The show was created and written by Doug Langdale. It first aired on Disney Channel in 2004. Later, it was shown on Toon Disney and Jetix in other countries.

Dave the Barbarian is special because it mixes old and new things. For example, Candy shops at a mall and uses a crystal ball for online shopping! The show also often "breaks the fourth wall," meaning characters sometimes talk directly to the audience or the narrator.
