Lego Star Wars is a super popular Lego theme and multimedia franchise. It brings together the amazing world of Star Wars with the fun of Lego building bricks. This theme includes over 910 Lego building sets and 1328 Lego minifigures. It also has a cool video game series with six games, plus many animated short films and TV shows.

The Lego Group first got the license for Star Wars from 1999 to 2008. But because it was so popular, they kept extending the license. It was extended to 2011, then 2016, then 2022, and now it's set to continue until 2032!

About Lego Star Wars

Lego Star Wars is based on the entire Star Wars story and all its characters. The product line mainly focuses on characters from the movies and TV shows. It was first announced in February 1999 at the North American International Toy Fair. This was done to connect with the release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in May of that year.

How Lego Star Wars Sets Are Made

The designers of Lego Star Wars have changed how they work. They now try to include popular minifigures in sets that are cheaper and easier to get. Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, the Creative Lead for Lego Star Wars, explained this new plan. He said that in the past, important minifigures were often only in expensive sets. Now, they want young kids and new Star Wars fans to be able to get them.

Designers also shared how they created the Force Ghost minifigures. This was possible because of new types of clear plastic. Minifigures use different plastics for different parts. This is because some parts need to be flexible, and others need to hold together tightly. For example, the hands are made from a different material than the heads.

Creating playsets based on new shows can be harder than designing vehicles. Michael Lee Stockwell, the Design Director, talked about a Lego set from The Mandalorian. He said they were interested in the Armourer's forge from the first season. But they didn't know enough about what would happen around it. It's often easier to understand a ship's design than a playset's story.

The Mandalorian Starfighter (set number: 75316) is a good example of how sets are chosen. Frederiksen explained that if something appears in many places, it's likely to be popular. They did the same for The Clone Wars sets. They found that vehicles from both the prequel movies and The Clone Wars made more fans happy.

Lego Star Wars designer Madison O'Neil talked about designing minifigures. She said they try to add as many details as possible. This includes printing on legs and arms, which they can do more of now. They work within company rules to make the minifigures as accurate as they can.

Lego Star Wars Building Sets

According to the official Lego database BrickLink, The Lego Group has released many sets. As of October 2023, there are 910 Lego sets and special polybags. There are also 1386 unique minifigures in the Lego Star Wars theme.

Cool Minifigures

Some minifigures appear in many Lego sets. Others are very rare, which makes them worth a lot more money. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader are the most common minifigures. Battle droids are also very common in Lego sets.

The very first Lego Star Wars minifigures were Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi. They came with the #7110 "Landspeeder" set. The first battle droid minifigure (sw0001a) had only four small design differences.

Lego changed the skin tone of minifigures from yellow to a more natural color between 2003 and 2004. By 2005, yellow skin was no longer used for Lego Star Wars figures. In 2019, the number of Lego Star Wars minifigures went over 1000. The 1000th minifigure was Iden Versio from the Battlefront II game.

Types of Lego Star Wars Sets

The first sets based on the original trilogy came out in 1999. This was at the same time as Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. The first wave included model 7140, an X-wing fighter.

Sets based on the prequel trilogy (Episodes I to III) came next. As new prequel movies were released, Lego made new models of ships and scenes. They also added more sets from the original trilogy.

Lego has also made models based on many other Star Wars stories. These include Clone Wars, The Clone Wars, The Old Republic, The Force Unleashed, Rebels, The Force Awakens, Battlefront, Rogue One, The Last Jedi, Solo, Resistance, The Mandalorian, The Rise of Skywalker, The Bad Batch, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars: Andor, Ahsoka, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Sets from Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, Galaxy's Edge and The Freemaker Adventures have also been made.

In 2022, The Lego Group announced that the Lego Star Wars theme will continue until 2032.

Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) Sets

Lego has released 37 special sets called the Ultimate Collector Series. These models are much bigger and more detailed than regular sets. They are mostly for display, not for playing. They often cost more and come with an information plaque.

The biggest UCS set is 75192, the 2017 Millennium Falcon. It has ten minifigures and 7541 pieces. This makes it the largest Lego Star Wars set ever. It is also the fifth largest Lego set of any collection.

In 2015, an older 2007 Millennium Falcon set (#10179) sold for 5000 euros (about US$5556.5) at an online auction. This made it the most expensive Lego set at that time.

Recent UCS sets include:

  • AT-AT (set number: #75313) released in November 2021.
  • Luke Skywalker's Landspeeder (set number: #75341) released in May 2022.
  • The Razor Crest (set number: #75331) released in October 2022.
  • X-wing Starfighter (set number: #75355) released in May 2023.
  • Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser (set number: #75367) released in October 2023.

Master Builder Series (MBS) Sets

Master Builder Series sets are also very detailed, like UCS sets. But MBS sets are made more for playing. They have many play features and inner details. UCS sets are more for display.

The first MBS set was #75222 Betrayal at Cloud City, released in 2018. In 2020, #75290 Mos Eisley Cantina became the largest MBS set. It has over 3,000 pieces and 21 minifigures.

The Helmet Collection Sets

In 2020, Lego started releasing brick-built helmets of famous Star Wars characters. These are meant for display and come with name plaques.

  • The first three were #75277 Boba Fett, #75276 Stormtrooper, and #75274 TIE Fighter Pilot.
  • In March 2021, Lego announced #75304 Darth Vader and #75305 Scout Trooper. They were released in April 2021.
  • In February 2022, Lego announced #75327 Luke Skywalker (Red Five), #75328 The Mandalorian and #75343 Dark Trooper. They were released in March 2022.
  • In January 2023, Lego announced #75351 Princess Leia (Boushh), #75349 Captain Rex and #75350 Clone Commander Cody. They were released in March 2023.

R2-D2 Models

Lego design master Kurt Kristiansen talked about the R2-D2 set (#75308). He said it was a fun challenge for him. He had been working on redesigning R2-D2 for almost 10 years.

In 2024, Lego released a smaller R2-D2 model. This was part of the 25th anniversary celebration of Lego Star Wars. This model also included a minifigure of Darth Malak from the Knights of the Old Republic game.

Imperial Probe Droid

The designer video for the Imperial Probe Droid set (#75306) explained some challenges. Lego designer Jan Neergaard Olesen built this model entirely in 3D. He said that in 3D programs, there is no gravity. This caused challenges for a model with a high balance point.

Diorama Collection

In 2022, Lego announced three Diorama building sets from the Star Wars universe. They were released in March 2022. These included the Death Star Trench Run Diorama, Dagobah Jedi Training Diorama, and Death Star Trash Compactor Diorama.

In 2023, Lego announced two more Diorama sets. They were released in May 2023. These were Emperor's Throne Room and Endor Speeder Chase.

In October 2023, the Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama (set number: 40658) was released. This set has 282 pieces and 5 minifigures. It includes Lego minifigures of Rey, Finn, Chewbacca, BB-8, and Porg.

Lego Art Sets

On August 1, 2020, Lego released 31200 Star Wars The Sith as part of the Lego Art theme. This set has 3,406 pieces. Builders can create a mosaic of three Star Wars villains. These are Darth Maul, Kylo Ren, and Darth Vader. You use Lego 1x1 studs to make the art.

Lego BrickHeadz Sets

Lego has released 20 Star Wars themed sets in the Lego BrickHeadz theme. These include characters from the sequel trilogy, the original trilogy, and The Mandalorian.
