Kylo Ren is a character from the Star Wars movies and shows. He first appeared in the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The actor Adam Driver plays him.
Kylo Ren's real name is Ben Solo. He is the son of famous Star Wars characters Han Solo and Leia Organa. His uncle, Luke Skywalker, trained him to be a Jedi. But Ben was pulled to the dark side of the Force by Supreme Leader Snoke. He wanted to be as powerful as his grandfather, Darth Vader.
Kylo Ren leads a group called the Knights of Ren. He also became a commander and later the Supreme Leader of the First Order. This group came from the old Galactic Empire.
Kylo Ren was the main bad guy in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). Adam Driver played him again in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). The character also appeared in cartoons and video games. Fans and critics really liked Adam Driver's acting.

How Kylo Ren Was Created

The director, JJ Abrams, wanted Kylo Ren's mask to be easy for kids to remember. Abrams said the mask was a way to honor Darth Vader. Concept designer Doug Chiang added that Kylo Ren "takes on [the] persona of [Vader] to haunt Luke."
The costume designer, Michael Kaplan, talked about the mask's design:
"I don't know if it was the kind of spaghetti type lines on it or what, but the next time J.J. [Abrams] came by that was what we presented to him and he loved it. Also the silver in those lines kind of reflects and changes color with the action. You know, if he's standing in front of fire you see that, so it almost brings you into the mask."
Adam Driver was announced for the film in April 2014. Kylo Ren was first seen in a short trailer in November 2014. He was holding a unique red lightsaber with a crossguard. His name, Kylo Ren, was revealed in December 2014.
Adam Driver is known for "method acting." This means he sometimes stayed in character as Kylo Ren even between filming scenes. He wanted to make the character feel real.

JJ Abrams explained that Kylo Ren is not a Sith. He works for Supreme Leader Snoke, who is strong in the dark side of the Force. Abrams also said that Kylo Ren got his name when he joined the Knights of Ren.
Writer Lawrence Kasdan said that Kylo Ren is a new kind of character for Star Wars. He is "full of emotion." Abrams added that Kylo Ren is not a typical bad guy. He is more complicated.
Adam Driver said that Kylo Ren is different from other villains. He has a "recklessness" that is not usually seen with the dark side. Driver explained that Kylo Ren is "unpolished." This can be seen in his costume and his lightsaber, which looks like it could break at any moment. This shows how unstable Kylo Ren is.
In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), it was shown that Kylo Ren and Rey were connected by a "dyad" in the Force. This means they were like "soulmates" or "twins of destiny" through the Force.

Kylo Ren is a character in the books that tell the stories of the Star Wars sequel movies. These books came out in 2015, 2017, and 2019.
According to the book Skywalker: A Family at War, Ben Solo was born to Princess Leia. This means he would have been a "Prince of Alderaan." But his grandfather, Darth Vader, and the Empire destroyed Alderaan before Ben was born.
Ben Solo was born on Chandrila in 5 ABY. This was one year after the Battle of Endor in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983). Chandrila was the temporary capital of the New Republic. Kylo Ren is also mentioned in the 2017 book Star Wars: Phasma.

Adam Driver played Kylo Ren in funny Undercover Boss sketches on Saturday Night Live. In these sketches, Kylo Ren pretends to be a normal worker to see what his employees really think of him.
Kylo Ren also appears in the Star Wars: Resistance series finale. He kills Agent Tierny for failing a mission. You can also hear Kylo Ren's voice in an episode of Star Wars: Rebels.
