Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is an exciting 2016 space opera film directed by Gareth Edwards. It's the first standalone Star Wars movie, and it takes place right before the very first Star Wars film from 1977. The story was created by John Knoll and developed by Gary Whitta, with the screenplay written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy.
The film was made by Lucasfilm and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen, and Forest Whitaker.
Rogue One tells the story of a brave group of rebels. They come together to steal the secret plans for the Death Star. This Death Star is a super powerful weapon built by the evil Galactic Empire. The film shows the Rebel Alliance's first big win against the Empire. This victory was first mentioned in the opening words of the original Star Wars movie.
Unlike other Star Wars films, Rogue One doesn't start with the usual opening crawl. It was made to feel more like a war movie. Filming began in August 2015 and finished in February 2016. The movie's music was composed by Michael Giacchino. It was a very expensive film to make, costing between $200 and $280.2 million.
Rogue One was shown for the first time in Los Angeles on December 10, 2016. It was released in theaters in the United States on December 16. Critics generally liked the movie. They praised the acting, story, visuals, and music. Many also liked its darker and more serious tone. The film earned over $1 billion worldwide. It was the second-highest-grossing film of 2016. It was also nominated for two Academy Awards. A TV show called Andor was made as a prequel to Rogue One. It started streaming on Disney+ in 2022.

The Story of Rogue One
The Death Star's Secret
The story begins with scientist Galen Erso. He and his family are hiding from the Empire. Imperial officer Orson Krennic finds them. Krennic wants Galen to finish building the Death Star. This is a huge weapon that can destroy planets. Galen's wife, Lyra, is killed. Their daughter, Jyn, escapes and is saved by Saw Gerrera, a rebel leader.
Fifteen years later, a pilot named Bodhi Rook leaves the Empire. He brings a secret message from Galen to Saw Gerrera. This message is on the moon Jedha. Meanwhile, Rebel Alliance officer Cassian Andor learns about the Death Star. He also hears about Bodhi's defection.
Jyn Joins the Rebellion
Jyn is freed from an Imperial prison camp. She is taken to the Rebels' base on Yavin IV. Rebel leader Mon Mothma asks Jyn to find Galen. The Rebels want to learn more about the Death Star. Cassian is secretly told to help Jyn. But he is also ordered to kill Galen, not rescue him.
Jyn, Cassian, and a reprogrammed Imperial droid named K-2SO travel to Jedha. The Empire is taking kyber crystals from Jedha. These crystals power the Death Star. In Jedha City, Saw Gerrera's rebels are fighting the Empire. Jyn and Cassian get caught in the battle.
Discovering the Weakness
They get help from Chirrut Îmwe, a blind warrior, and his friend Baze Malbus. Jyn meets Saw, who is holding Bodhi. Saw shows Jyn Galen's message. Galen reveals he built a secret weakness into the Death Star. The plans for this weakness are in an Imperial data vault on the planet Scarif.
On the Death Star, Krennic tests the weapon. It destroys Jedha City. Jyn and her group escape with Bodhi. Saw stays behind and dies. Imperial governor Grand Moff Tarkin takes control of the Death Star.
A Dangerous Mission
Bodhi leads the group to Galen's research facility on the planet Eadu. Cassian almost kills Galen, but he hesitates. Rebel bombers then attack the facility. Galen is badly hurt and dies in Jyn's arms. Jyn and her group escape on a stolen Imperial shuttle.
Krennic is called to meet Darth Vader. Vader is angry about the attack on Jedha City. He tells Krennic to make sure there are no more problems.
Jyn suggests a mission to steal the Death Star plans. But the Rebel Council thinks it's too risky. Jyn's group decides to go anyway. A small team of volunteers joins them. Bodhi calls them "Rogue One."
The Battle for the Plans
Using the stolen shuttle, they get past Scarif's shield. Jyn, Cassian, and K-2SO sneak into the base. The others attack the Imperial soldiers to create a distraction.
The Rebel Alliance learns about the raid. They send their fleet to help. A big space battle begins against the Imperial fleet. K-2SO sacrifices himself so Jyn and Cassian can get the data. Chirrut is killed after he activates a switch to contact the Rebel fleet. Baze is killed soon after. Bodhi is killed by a grenade. But he tells the Rebel fleet they must turn off the planet's shield. This will let them send the plans.
Rebel Admiral Raddus uses a Rebel ship to crash two Imperial Star Destroyers together. The wreckage destroys the shield generator. Jyn gets the plans. Krennic ambushes her, but Cassian shoots him. Jyn sends the plans to the Rebel command ship. The Death Star arrives above Scarif, commanded by Tarkin. He orders the Death Star to destroy the base. Everyone there, including Krennic, Cassian, and Jyn, is killed.
The Rebel fleet tries to escape. But Darth Vader's Star Destroyer stops many ships. Vader attacks the Rebel command ship. He kills many troops trying to get the plans back. But a smaller ship escapes with the plans. On this ship, Princess Leia Organa says the plans will bring hope to the Rebellion.

How the Movie Was Made
Filming Locations
Principal photography for Rogue One started on August 8, 2015. It began at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England. Huge sets were built there. The movie was filmed using special 6K digital cameras.
Filming also happened in many places around the world:
- In Iceland, places like Reynisfjara and the mountains of Hjörleifshöfði were used. These became the Erso family's home on Lah'mu and the Imperial facility on Eadu.
- The islands of Gan and Baresdhoo in the Maldives were used for the planet Scarif.
- Wadi Rum in Jordan and the fortress of Masada were used for the planet Jedha.
- Canary Wharf tube station in London was used for a chase scene inside an Imperial base. This was filmed overnight when the station was closed.
The movie cost about $200 million to make. Some reports say the total cost was closer to $280.2 million.
Special Effects and Reshoots
By February 2016, the film was almost finished. However, some extra filming, called "reshoots," happened in June 2016. Tony Gilroy helped direct these reshoots and made changes to the story.
Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) created the movie's amazing visual effects. They used computer graphics (CGI) to bring back characters like Grand Moff Tarkin and Princess Leia Organa. They used the faces of actors Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher from old films. These digital faces were put onto new actors. For Tarkin, actor Guy Henry performed the role, and a digital version of Cushing's face was placed over his. For Leia, actress Ingvild Deila played the part, and Fisher's face was added. Old recordings of Carrie Fisher's voice were used for Leia's line.
The final work on the film was completed on November 28, 2016.
The Music of Rogue One
The music for Rogue One was composed by Michael Giacchino. He had a very short time, only four and a half weeks, to create the entire score! He started right after finishing the music for Doctor Strange.
Giacchino wanted to honor the classic Star Wars music by John Williams. He used some of Williams' famous themes in his score. But he also added his own new music to make it unique. The official soundtrack was released on December 16, 2016.
