Becoming a Filmmaker
Gareth Edwards was born in Nuneaton, England. From a young age, he dreamed of directing his own films. He has said that Star Wars was the main reason he wanted to become a filmmaker.
He studied film and video at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College. After college, Edwards started his career by creating amazing visual effects for TV shows. These shows included Nova, Perfect Disaster, and Heroes and Villains. For one show, he made 250 visual effects!
In 2008, he entered a special film challenge. He had to make a whole film from start to finish in just two days! Edwards won this contest with his short film called Factory Farmed.

Directing Big Movies
After his success with Monsters, Hollywood noticed Gareth Edwards. He got the chance to direct bigger movies. In 2011, he signed a deal to direct the 2014 Godzilla movie. This was a huge step for him!
Edwards then directed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was the first stand-alone Star Wars film. It came out in 2016 and starred Felicity Jones.
Some of his biggest inspirations for filmmaking are famous directors like George Lucas (who created Star Wars), Steven Spielberg, and Quentin Tarantino.
In 2020, Edwards began working on a new film called True Love. This movie was later renamed The Creator and was released in 2023. It stars John David Washington. For this film, he worked again with cinematographer Greig Fraser, who also worked on Rogue One.
In January 2024, Gareth Edwards received a special honor in his hometown of Nuneaton. He was named an honorary Freeman of the borough. This is a special title given to people who have done great things for their community.
In February 2024, it was announced that Edwards would direct Jurassic World Rebirth. This new dinosaur movie is planned for release in 2025.
