Edwards' Filmmaking Journey
Early Life and Inspiration
Gareth Edwards was born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England. He always dreamed of directing movies since he was a child. He has said that Star Wars was the main reason he wanted to become a filmmaker. He went to Higham Lane School and then studied film and video at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College. He graduated in 1996. Later, in 2012, he received an honorary Master of Arts degree.
Starting in Visual Effects
Edwards began his career working on visual effects. He created digital effects for TV shows like Nova and Perfect Disaster. In 2008, he joined a special film challenge. He had to make a complete film in just two days. Edwards won this contest with his short film called Factory Farmed.
Making Monsters
Winning the film challenge led him to write and direct his first full-length movie, Monsters. What's amazing is that Edwards created all the visual effects for Monsters using regular, affordable equipment. Besides the two main actors, the film crew was very small, with only five people.
Directing Big Movies
The success of Monsters caught the attention of Hollywood studios. In 2011, Edwards got his first big movie deal. He was chosen to direct the 2014 Godzilla reboot. This was a huge step up to a major Hollywood production.
Working on Star Wars
Edwards then directed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This was the first stand-alone Star Wars film. It was released on December 16, 2016. The movie starred Felicity Jones.

Recent Projects
In 2020, it was announced that Edwards would direct and write a new film. This movie was later named The Creator. It stars John David Washington and was released on September 29, 2023. Edwards also worked with cinematographer Greig Fraser and composer Hans Zimmer on this film.
In February 2024, it was reported that Edwards would direct Jurassic World Rebirth. This movie is scheduled to be released on July 2, 2025.
Honors and Influences
On January 29, 2024, Edwards was given a special honor in his hometown. He was named an honorary Freeman of the borough of Nuneaton. This happened during a ceremony at the Town Hall.
Edwards has mentioned that George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Quentin Tarantino are some of his biggest inspirations for filmmaking.
