The Academy Award for Best Production Design is a special prize given to people who create the amazing looks and settings in movies. It's like giving an award for the best "movie world" a film creates! This award celebrates the work of art directors and set decorators. They design and build everything you see on screen, from grand castles to cozy homes.
The award used to be called "Best Art Direction." But in 2012, it changed to "Best Production Design." This happened because the group that gives out the awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), changed the name of their "Art Directors" group to the "Designers" group. Since 1947, the award has been shared between the main art director and the set decorators. Set decorators choose all the furniture, props, and small details that make a scene look real.

What is Production Design?
Production design is all about creating the visual world of a movie. This includes the sets, locations, props, and even the colors used. A production designer works closely with the director to bring the story to life visually. They help decide how each scene will look. This makes sure the movie's setting matches its mood and story.
Who Wins the Most?
Some people have won this award many times! Here are a few of the top winners:
- Cedric Gibbons has won the most awards, with 11 wins. He was nominated 39 times!
- Edwin B. Willis has won 8 awards.
- Richard Day has won 7 awards.
- Thomas Little and Walter M. Scott each have 6 wins.
- Lyle R. Wheeler has won 5 awards.
