The 94th Academy Awards ceremony was a big event where the best movies from 2021 were celebrated. It was held on March 27, 2022, in Los Angeles. The show was hosted by three funny people: Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes. This was the first time in many years that more than one person hosted the Oscars!
A movie called CODA made history. It was the first movie from a streaming service (like Apple TV+) to win the top award, Best Picture. CODA also won two other awards. Troy Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor, and Sian Heder won for writing and directing.
Another movie, Dune, won the most awards that night, taking home six Oscars. Other movies like The Eyes of Tammy Faye won two awards. Many other great films won one award each.
During the show, something unexpected happened. Actor Will Smith went onto the stage and hit comedian Chris Rock. This happened after Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. This event was talked about a lot and overshadowed the rest of the ceremony.
Top Winners and Special Moments
CODA won all three awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture. It was the first movie from a streaming service (Apple TV+) to win Best Picture. It was also the first movie from the Sundance Film Festival and the first with mostly deaf actors in main roles to win this award.
Troy Kotsur became the first deaf male actor to win an Oscar. He was only the second deaf actor ever to win, after his co-star Marlee Matlin. Also, Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actress for her role in West Side Story. This was special because Rita Moreno had won for playing the same character in the 1961 version of the movie. They are only the third pair of actors to win for the same role in different films.
Dune was the biggest winner of the night, taking home six awards. Other movies like The Eyes of Tammy Faye won two awards. Many other films won one award each, showing the variety of great movies from 2021.
The 2022 ceremony was also special because a woman won the Best Director award for the second year in a row. Jane Campion won for The Power of the Dog. She followed Chloé Zhao, who won in 2021. Jane Campion is now the first woman to win Oscars for both directing and screenwriting.
