Amy Beth Schumer (born June 1, 1981) is a well-known American comedian, actress, writer, producer, and director. She started her comedy career in the early 2000s. In 2007, she appeared on the TV show Last Comic Standing.
From 2013 to 2016, Amy created and starred in the Comedy Central sketch comedy series Inside Amy Schumer. This show won a Peabody Award and an Emmy Award in 2015.
Amy also wrote and starred in the movie Trainwreck (2015). She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for her role. Later, she starred in other comedy films like Snatched (2017) and I Feel Pretty (2019). She also created and starred in the HBO documentary series Expecting Amy (2020) and the Hulu comedy-drama series Life & Beth (2022–2024).
She performed on Broadway in the play Meteor Shower. For this, she received a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play nomination. Amy has also been nominated for two Grammy Awards for her comedy album and for narrating her book, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo (2016).

Early Life and Education
Amy Schumer was born on June 1, 1981, in Manhattan, New York City. Her parents were Sandra Jane and Gordon David Schumer. Her father owned a baby furniture company.
Amy's father came from a Jewish family from Ukraine. Her mother came from a Protestant background and later converted to Judaism. Amy was raised Jewish and faced antisemitism as a child.
When Amy was nine, her father's business failed, and he went bankrupt. He was also diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Her parents divorced when she was 12 years old.
Moving to Long Island
After her parents divorced, Amy moved to Long Island with her mother. They lived in Rockville Centre. Amy attended South Side High School. She was known for being funny and a bit mischievous in school.
She graduated from high school in 1999. Amy then went to Towson University in Towson, Maryland. She earned a degree in theater in 2003.
After college, she moved back to New York City. She studied acting for two years. During this time, she worked as a bartender and a waitress. Amy has a younger sister, Kim Caramele, who is a comedy writer. She also has a half-brother, Jason Stein, who is a musician.
Comedy Career
Starting Stand-Up Comedy
Amy began her stand-up comedy career on June 1, 2004. Her first performance was at the Gotham Comedy Club. In 2007, she recorded an episode for Comedy Central's Live at Gotham. She also appeared on the TV show Last Comic Standing. She made it to the finals of the fifth season and placed fourth.
Amy said that Last Comic Standing was a fun experience. She felt no pressure because she was new to stand-up. Every time she moved forward in the competition, it was a happy surprise.
Early TV Appearances
In 2008, Amy co-starred in the Comedy Central reality show Reality Bites Back. She also appeared in commercials for Butterfinger in 2009. From 2007 to 2012, she was a regular guest on the Fox News show Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld.
Her first stand-up special, Comedy Central Presents, aired in 2010. She also co-hosted A Different Spin with Mark Hoppus in 2011. Amy has written for Cosmopolitan magazine. She appeared on the ... with Marc Maron podcast in 2011.
Amy also had roles in other TV shows. These include 30 Rock, Delocated, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Girls. She was also a frequent guest on popular radio shows.
Comedy Specials and Films
Amy released a stand-up comedy album called Cutting in 2011. Her stand-up special premiered on Comedy Central in 2012. She said she likes to talk about personal stories that everyone can relate to.
In 2012, Amy acted in three films: Price Check, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, and Sleepwalk with Me. She also appeared on The Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen in 2011 and The Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne Barr in 2012.
Inside Amy Schumer

Amy's sketch comedy series, Inside Amy Schumer, started on Comedy Central on April 30, 2013. The show quickly became popular. It was renewed for a second season in 2014 and a third season in 2015.
In 2014, Amy went on her Back Door Tour to promote her show. She also appeared on Jerry Seinfeld's online series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.
Hosting and Film Success
Amy hosted the 2015 MTV Movie Awards on April 11. She wrote and starred in her first main film role in Trainwreck. This movie was released on July 17, 2015.
In 2015, Amy performed as an opening act for Madonna at three concerts in New York City. On October 17, 2015, her comedy special Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo premiered on HBO. This special was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards in 2016. It also earned her a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album.
Memoir and Broadway Debut
Amy started her first world tour on August 26 in Dublin. In 2016, she wrote a memoir titled The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo. This book was a bestseller on The New York Times list for two weeks. It also earned her a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album.
In 2017, Amy made her Broadway debut. She acted in Steve Martin's comedy play Meteor Shower. She was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her performance.
In 2018, she starred in the comedy film I Feel Pretty. She also launched a podcast called Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls, 1 Keith. Recent Projects
In May 2020, Amy and her husband, Chris Fischer, starred in a cooking show. It was called Amy Schumer Learns to Cook for Food Network. They filmed the show themselves while staying home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
She also appeared in a documentary series called Expecting Amy. This series followed Amy as she prepared for a stand-up special while going through a difficult pregnancy. It premiered on HBO Max in July 2020.
Amy appeared in the 2021 film The Humans. She also wrote, directed, and starred in Life & Beth. This 10-episode comedy series for Hulu premiered on March 18, 2022. The show Inside Amy Schumer returned in 2022 with new specials on Paramount+.
In January 2022, she had a guest role in season two of Only Murders in the Building. She also co-hosted the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, 2022. In June 2022, she joined the cast of Jerry Seinfeld's movie Unfrosted. In 2023, her comedy special Emergency Contact was released. She also directed this special.
Influences
Amy Schumer has been inspired by many comedians. Some of her comedic influences include Wendy Liebman, Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball, and Joan Rivers. She also looks up to actress and producer Goldie Hawn.
Personal Life
On February 13, 2018, Amy Schumer married chef and farmer Chris Fischer in Malibu, California. In October 2018, she announced that they were expecting their first child. Their son, Gene, was born on May 5, 2019. Amy initially gave him the middle name Attell, but later changed it to David.
Her son was born by caesarean section due to her endometriosis. In September 2021, Amy had surgery to help with her endometriosis symptoms. In February 2024, she shared that she was diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome.
