Trolls Band Together is a fun animated musical comedy film from 2023. It was made by DreamWorks Animation and released by Universal Pictures. The movie is based on the popular Good Luck Trolls toys. It's the third movie in the exciting Trolls series, following Trolls World Tour (2020).
Walt Dohrn directed the film, with Tim Heitz as co-director. The story was written by Elizabeth Tippet. Many familiar voices returned, like Anna Kendrick as Poppy and Justin Timberlake as Branch. New stars also joined, including Eric André, Kid Cudi, Daveed Diggs, Troye Sivan, and Camila Cabello.
In this movie, Branch and Poppy are now a couple. They go on a big adventure to save Branch's brother, Floyd. To do this, Branch needs to reunite with his brothers from their old boyband, BroZone.
The idea for a third Trolls movie started even before Trolls World Tour came out. DreamWorks Animation officially announced the film in November 2021. New characters and the movie's title were revealed in March 2023. While mostly computer-animated, the film also includes some cool 2D animation. These parts were inspired by classic movies like Yellow Submarine (1968) and Fantasia (1940).
Trolls Band Together first came out in Denmark on October 12, 2023. It then arrived in the United States on November 17. The movie earned over $209 million worldwide. It received good reviews from both critics and audiences.

The Trolls' New Adventure: A Story of Family and Harmony

BroZone's Past and a Broken Harmony
Years ago, a young Branch and his four older brothers formed a boyband called BroZone. The brothers were John Dory, Spruce, Clay, and Floyd. They tried to perform the "Perfect Family Harmony." This is a super powerful ability Trolls can use when they are totally in sync. But their different personalities and the stress of being famous caused problems. They couldn't hit the harmony.
John Dory, Spruce, and Clay argued and broke up the band. This made Floyd and Branch very sad. Floyd, who was closest to Branch, also left. He promised Branch he would come back one day. Branch was then raised by his grandmother, Rosiepuff.
A Wedding Interrupted and a Brother in Trouble
In the present day, Branch and Poppy are at Bridget and Gristle's wedding in Bergen Town. Suddenly, John Dory appears! He tells them that Floyd has been captured. Two Mount Rageon teenagers, Velvet and Veneer, have taken him. These two want to be pop stars.
Velvet and Veneer trapped Floyd in a diamond perfume bottle. They are using it to steal his singing essence. This makes their own singing better. But this process could eventually kill Floyd. The only way to break the diamond bottle is with the Perfect Family Harmony. Branch doesn't want to, but he agrees to help John Dory find their other brothers. They need to rescue Floyd. Poppy and Tiny Diamond join them on this important mission.
Finding the Lost Brothers
The group travels in John Dory's special armadillo-like van named Rhonda. Their first stop is Vacay Island. There, they find Spruce, who now goes by Bruce. He has started a big family with his wife and 13 kids. Bruce doesn't want to help at first. But his family convinces him to join the rescue mission.
Next, they find Clay at an old miniature golf course. This place is home to a secret group of Pop Trolls. These Trolls don't know that the Bergens are no longer their enemies. They got separated from other Pop Trolls a long time ago. The leader of this hidden group is Viva. She turns out to be Poppy's long-lost sister!
Poppy is thrilled to meet Viva. But things get difficult when Viva refuses to believe the Bergens have changed. She tries to stop Poppy's group from leaving the golf course. Thanks to Clay, they manage to escape. Poppy and Viva are both heartbroken by their disagreement.
Velvet and Veneer's Evil Plan
Meanwhile, Velvet and Veneer keep taking Floyd's essence. Velvet even admits she wrote a fake letter to trick Floyd's brothers into coming. Their assistant, Crimp, creates special shoulder-pad suits. These suits make the essence extraction even stronger. Velvet and Veneer plan to use them to capture all of BroZone.
Mount Rageous and a Family Reunion
The Trolls finally reach Mount Rageous. But they argue again and can't achieve the Perfect Family Harmony. When his brothers decide to split up again, Branch gets upset. He tells them off for leaving him and treating him like a baby. He explains that he grew up the day they left him and lived alone after losing his grandmother.
Branch, Poppy, and Tiny find Floyd on their own. But Velvet and Veneer capture John Dory, Spruce, and Clay. This makes rescuing Floyd even harder.
Branch and Poppy confront Velvet and Veneer during a show. The villains try to escape in their limo. Velvet and Veneer start using the shoulder-pads to drain the essence from Branch's captured brothers. Luckily, Viva arrives to help! She teamed up with Bridget and Gristle, who stumbled upon the golf course. Together, they manage to save Branch's brothers, but Floyd is still in danger.
The Perfect Family Harmony and a Happy Ending
Floyd is almost out of essence. Branch tells his brothers that they don't need to be perfect to be in harmony. They just need to be themselves as a family. John Dory, Spruce, and Clay finally understand. They accept that Branch has grown up.
With Poppy and Viva, they all perform the Perfect Family Harmony. This powerful song breaks them free from their prisons. Floyd loses his last bit of essence and seems to disappear. But through their strong family bond, he is quickly revived! Veneer, who felt bad about their actions, publicly admits their crimes. This makes Velvet furious, and both are sent to prison.
The Trolls return to Vacay Island. BroZone performs a comeback concert, joined by another band Branch was once part of, called Kismet. Later, Branch suggests that Poppy and Viva become honorary members of BroZone.
In a scene after the credits, Tiny Diamond is relaxing. He talks about his adventure with Branch and Poppy. He learns about growing up, but decides to stay a baby for now.

How the Idea Started
On April 9, 2020, Justin Timberlake said he hoped for many more Trolls movies. This was during an Apple Music event. Then, on November 22, 2021, DreamWorks Animation announced the third Trolls film. They set its release date for November 17, 2023. Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake were confirmed to return as Poppy and Branch.
On March 28, 2023, the first trailer came out. New voice actors were officially announced, including Eric André, Kid Cudi, and Camila Cabello. Walt Dohrn returned to direct, and Gina Shay produced the film. Tim Heitz was later announced as co-director. On the same day, DreamWorks Animation revealed the official title: Trolls Band Together.
Animation Style
The movie's producer, Gina Shay, said the idea for this film came right after the first Trolls movie in 2016. Trolls Band Together mostly uses CGI animation. But it also has some cool 2D animation parts. These were made by Titmouse, Inc.. The 2D styles were inspired by classic animated films like Yellow Submarine (1968) and Fantasia (1940).

Theodore Shapiro returned to compose the music for Trolls Band Together. He also worked on the previous film. On September 14, 2023, after the second trailer was released, DreamWorks announced exciting news. The famous group NSYNC would perform a new song for the movie! The song is called "Better Place." This was their first new song in 22 years!

Coming to Theaters
Trolls Band Together first came out in other countries. It started in Denmark on October 12, 2023. Then, it was released in the United States on November 17. The previous movie, Trolls World Tour (2020), was released online and in a few theaters because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But this movie returned to being shown only in movie theaters first.
Video Game Fun
A video game based on the movie was released on October 27, 2023. It's called Trolls: Remix Rescue. You can play it on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC. In the game, Poppy, Branch, and you (the player) go on a mission. You need to save the Troll Kingdom from Chaz the Smooth Jazz Troll. He tries to hypnotize everyone with his saxophone!
Watching at Home
Trolls Band Together became available to watch at home online on December 19, 2023. You could also buy it on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD starting January 16, 2024. The movie also streams on Peacock and Netflix at different times.
