Story of the Trolls
The Trolls are small, colorful creatures. They live in a world filled with happiness. They love to sing, dance, hug, and have fun all day. But then, the Bergens found them. Bergens are large, sad creatures. They believe the only way to feel happy is by eating a Troll.
The Bergens captured the Trolls. They would eat them every year during a special event called Trollstice. One Trollstice, King Peppy led his people to freedom. His baby daughter, Princess Poppy, was with him. They escaped through secret tunnels. This happened just as Prince Gristle Jr. was about to eat his first Troll.
King Gristle Sr., the prince's father, was very angry. He banished his chef, who was in charge of Trollstice. The chef promised to leave. But secretly, she planned to get revenge and take over the kingdom.
Twenty Years Later
Twenty years passed. Poppy, now grown up, decided to throw a huge party. It was to celebrate the Trolls' escape. But Branch, a cautious and grumpy gray Troll, warned her. He said loud parties would attract the Bergens.
Branch's warnings came true. The chef saw the party's fireworks. She kidnapped Poppy's friends. This included Creek, a "Zen" Troll whom Poppy liked.
Poppy decided to go on a rescue mission alone. No other Troll wanted to go to Bergen Town. Branch later joined her. He saved her from some spiders. He knew she would go alone if he didn't help.
Inside Bergen Town
Poppy and Branch entered the Bergen king's castle. They saw King Gristle Jr. seemingly eat Creek. But Poppy still hoped Creek was alive. They found the other captured Trolls. A kind scullery maid named Bridget was guarding them.
Poppy learned that Bridget secretly liked King Gristle Jr. Poppy offered to help Bridget get a date with the king. At the same time, Poppy wanted to find out if Creek was truly alive.
The Date and a Discovery
The Trolls helped Bridget get ready for her date. They even put on a musical number. Branch refused to sing, which caused an argument with Poppy. He explained why he didn't sing. When he was a child, his singing led the chef to him. His grandmother was captured trying to save him. This made him feel guilty, and his color turned gray.
Poppy comforted Branch with a hug. The Trolls helped Bridget, who was disguised as "Lady Glittersparkles." She had her date with Gristle Jr. at a roller rink and arcade. Gristle Jr. agreed to let her come to Trollstice. During the date, Poppy saw Creek. He was held captive inside a jewel on the king's necklace.
Betrayal and Despair
After helping Bridget, the Trolls tried to rescue Creek. They wanted to steal the jewel from Gristle's room. But they found the jewel was empty. Then, the chef captured the Trolls. Poppy was shocked to learn that Creek had betrayed them. He told the Bergens where the Trolls were to save himself. He wasn't Zen at all. His capture in the jewel was a trick.
Creek used Poppy's cowbell to lure every Troll from Troll Village. The chef and other Bergen cooks captured them all. All the Trolls were thrown into a pot, ready to be eaten. A heartbroken Poppy lost all hope. She and all the other Trolls turned gray.
Hope and Happiness
Branch tried to cheer Poppy up. He sang "True Colors" for her. He told her he loved her. Poppy regained her colors and realized she loved Branch too. They returned each other's feelings. This brought all the Trolls' colors back, including Branch's.
Bridget saved the Trolls, ready to sacrifice herself. Poppy couldn't leave Bridget behind. With Branch and her friends, Poppy showed Gristle Jr. and the Bergens that Bridget was Lady Glittersparkles. They also showed them that eating Trolls was not needed for happiness. They could find happiness inside themselves.
The angry chef tried to harm the Trolls. But she was knocked into a serving cart. The cart caught fire and rolled out of Bergen Town. Creek was still in her pouch. Both the Trolls and Bergens celebrated. New life came to the town. Poppy was then made queen of the Trolls. Poppy and Branch shared a friendly hug.
In a scene after the credits, the chef tries to eat Creek. But then, a hill monster eats both of them.
