Siân Heder (born June 23, 1977) is an American filmmaker. She is well known for writing and directing the movies Tallulah and CODA.
Her movie CODA won her an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film also won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It also won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur.

Early Life and Education
Siân Heder was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on June 23, 1977. Her parents, Mags Harries and Lajos Héder, are both artists. Her sister, Thyra Heder, is also an artist.
Siân studied at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama. She earned a BFA degree there.
Her Career in Film and TV
After college, Heder moved to Los Angeles. She wanted to become an actress and a screenwriter. She worked for a nanny agency to support herself. Her experiences as a nanny gave her ideas for Mother, her first short film. She wrote and directed this film.
In 2005, the script for Mother was chosen for a special program. This program was the Directing Workshop for Women at the American Film Institute. Mother won the "Best Narrative Short" award at the Florida Film Festival. It also received honors at the Cannes Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival.
TV Shows
In 2010, Heder won a Peabody Award for her writing on the TV series Men of a Certain Age. In 2011, she wrote and directed a short comedy called Dog Eat Dog (A Short Tale). This film starred Zachary Quinto and helped raise awareness for pet adoption.
She also wrote for the first three seasons of the Netflix show Orange Is the New Black. Later, she wrote and was an executive producer for the first two seasons of the Apple TV+ series Little America.
Directing Movies
In 2015, Heder directed the movie Tallulah. It starred Elliot Page and Allison Janney. The movie first showed at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2016. It received good reviews from critics. Netflix released Tallulah on July 29, 2016.
In 2021, Heder's film CODA premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Apple bought the rights to the film for $25 million. It was released in theaters and on Apple TV+ on August 13, 2021.
For her work on CODA, Heder won two big awards. She won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. She also won the BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Personal Life
Siân Heder is married to David Newsom, who is an actor and producer. They have two children together.
