The BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay is a special prize given each year at the British Academy Film Awards. It honors the person who wrote the best movie script that was based on something else. This could be a book, a play, or even a true story.
This award is given by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). BAFTA is a British group that hosts big awards shows for movies, television, and video games. Since 1983, this specific award has been given out at an annual ceremony.
In the lists below, the movie titles and names in bold with a gold background are the winners. The other names are the nominees who were also considered for the award. The winner is always listed first in each group.

History of the Award
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) started giving out the Best Adapted Screenplay award in 1968. Before that, there was just one award for all screenplays. But then, they split it into two awards. The other award is for Best Original Screenplay, which means a script written from scratch.
Two writers, Christopher Hampton and Peter Straughan, have won this award more than anyone else. They each have two wins. Four other writers, Ronald Harwood, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Eric Roth, and Aaron Sorkin, have been nominated the most times, with four nominations each.
Winners and Nominees by Year
This section shows all the movies and screenwriters who have won or been nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. A screenplay is "adapted" when it's based on a story that already exists, like a novel or a play.
