Location United Kingdom
Currently held by Peter Straughan for Conclave (2024)

The BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay is a special prize given out every year at the British Academy Film Awards. It's awarded by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) to a screenwriter (the person who writes the movie script). This award celebrates the best movie script that was based on something else, like a book, a play, or even a true story.

BAFTA is a British group that hosts big awards shows for movies, TV, kids' shows, and even video games. Since 1983, they've given out the BAFTA award for Best Adapted Screenplay at their yearly ceremony.

What is an Adapted Screenplay?

An adapted screenplay is a movie script that isn't completely new. Instead, it's based on something that already exists. This could be:

  • A popular book or novel
  • A play
  • A short story
  • A real-life event or biography
  • Even a comic book or a video game!

The job of a screenwriter who adapts a story is to take the original material and turn it into a script that works well for a movie. They have to decide what parts to keep, what to change, and how to make the story exciting for the big screen.

History of the Award

The BAFTA award for Best Adapted Screenplay has been given out since 1968. Before that, there was just one award for all screenplays. But then, BAFTA decided to split it into two: one for scripts that were completely new (called Best Original Screenplay) and this one, for scripts based on existing stories.

A writer named Christopher Hampton has won this award more than anyone else, with two wins. Several writers, like Ronald Harwood, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Eric Roth, and Aaron Sorkin, have been nominated four times each, showing how often their work has been recognized.
