Early Life and Music
When Peter Straughan was younger, he really wanted to be a professional musician. He played bass guitar in a band from Newcastle called The Honest Johns. He spent about four years touring and recording music with them in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
After his time with the band, he decided to go to Newcastle University to study. While he was a student there, he was also part of another band called Cactusman. He even wrote a song called "Killer," which was featured on a CD album called North of London. This album showcased music from bands in the North East of England.
Writing for the Big Screen
Peter Straughan has written many exciting movies. He helped write the film Mrs Ratcliffe's Revolution in 2006. He also adapted a book into the movie How to Lose Friends & Alienate People.
In 2009, he wrote The Men Who Stare at Goats. A big moment in his career was co-writing Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 2011. He worked on this screenplay with his wife, Bridget O'Connor. Sadly, Bridget passed away from cancer in 2010, before the movie was even released. For their amazing work on this film, they won a BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Peter Straughan also adapted Hilary Mantel's famous books about King Henry VIII for television. These books, Wolf Hall, Bring Up the Bodies, and The Mirror & the Light, became the TV series Wolf Hall in 2015. A sequel, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, came out in 2024.
In 2025, Peter Straughan received several major awards for his film Conclave. He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay, the BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and the prestigious Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
