Peter Straughan (born in 1968) is a talented writer from Britain. He writes plays, movie scripts, and books. He won an Oscar for his movie script Conclave in 2024. He was also nominated for an Oscar before for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 2011.

Early Life and Music
Peter Straughan first wanted to be a professional musician. He played bass guitar in a band called The Honest Johns. They toured and recorded music in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
After four years, he left the band to study at Newcastle University. While he was a student, he also played in another band called Cactusman. He wrote a song called "Killer." This song was featured on a CD album called North of London. It was a collection of music by bands from the North East of England.
Becoming a Screenwriter
A screenwriter is someone who writes scripts for movies and TV shows. Peter Straughan has written many successful films. He often works with other writers.
He helped write the movie Mrs Ratcliffe's Revolution in 2006. He also adapted a book into the movie How to Lose Friends & Alienate People. In 2009, he wrote The Men Who Stare at Goats.
In 2011, he co-wrote Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. For this movie, he was nominated for an Oscar. He wrote this script with his wife, Bridget O'Connor. Sadly, Bridget passed away in 2010 before the movie was released. They both won a BAFTA award for their work on the script. A BAFTA is a major British award for film and television.
Peter Straughan also adapted the book Wolf Hall for a TV series. A second series of Wolf Hall was planned in 2019. In 2025, he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay and another Oscar for his work on Conclave.
