Edward Berger (born in 1970) is a talented director and screenwriter. He has both Swiss and Austrian citizenship. He is well-known for his work in Germany, where he grew up. Some of his famous German films include Jack (2014) and All Quiet on the Western Front (2022).

He also directed his first English-language film, Conclave (2024). Edward Berger has worked on several popular TV series too. These include Deutschland 83 (2015) and Patrick Melrose (2018).

For All Quiet on the Western Front, Berger received an Oscar for Best International Film. The movie also won three BAFTAs. His film Conclave earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director. It also won a BAFTA for Outstanding British Film.

Early Life and Schooling

Edward Berger was born in 1970 in Wolfsburg, which was then in West Germany. His mother was from Switzerland, and his father was from Austria. His father worked for Volkswagen, a car company. Edward grew up in a regular family with three brothers and sisters.

He finished high school in Wolfsburg in the late 1980s. After that, he studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig from 1990 to 1991. He then moved to New York City to study directing. He finished his studies at the Tisch School of the Arts in 1994. In 1997, he moved to Berlin, Germany.

Berger has citizenship from both Switzerland and Austria because of his parents. He has said that even though he doesn't have a German passport, he supports Germany in sports. He feels like a European citizen.

Edward Berger has worked mostly in Germany and the United States. He started his career at an American film company called Good Machine. There, he helped with films by famous directors like Ang Lee. By 1994, he was in charge of the production department. He also taught film at universities.

His first full-length movie was Gomez – Kopf oder Zahl (Gomez – Heads or Tails) in 1998. He wrote the story for this film himself. In 2002, he directed a TV movie called Asylum. This movie was nominated for an International Emmy Award. In 2004, he wrote and directed another TV movie, Welcome to the Club.

In 2008, he worked on the TV series KDD – Kriminaldauerdienst. He wrote and directed several episodes. In 2012, his film A Good Summer [de] won an important German award called the Grimme-Preis.

Berger co-wrote his third movie, Jack, with his wife, Nele Mueller-Stöfen [de]. The film was shown at the 2014 Berlinale film festival. It won the German Film Award in 2015 for best feature film. It also won Best Director at the German Directors Guild Awards. Berger said he likes to challenge himself with his films.

In 2014, Berger directed the TV series Deutschland 83. This show became very popular around the world. It was the first German TV show to be shown in the US. In 2016, Deutschland 83 won an International Emmy Award.

He also directed the TV series Patrick Melrose (2018). This show starred Benedict Cumberbatch. For Patrick Melrose, Berger won his first BAFTA Award for Best Limited Series.

Edward Berger wrote, directed, and produced All Quiet on the Western Front. This film was released in 2022. It received more Oscar nominations than any other German film before it. It won seven BAFTA awards and the Oscar for Best International Film. Critics around the world praised the movie.

His 2024 film Conclave was also very successful. It is a drama based on a book by Robert Harris. Berger said making Conclave felt like going from a physical war to an intellectual war.
