Colin James Farrell (born 31 May 1976) is an Irish actor. He has been a main actor in many big movies and smaller independent films since the 2000s. He has won several awards, including three Golden Globe Awards, and was nominated for an Academy Award.

The Irish Times newspaper called him Ireland's fifth-greatest film actor in 2020. In 2023, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Colin started acting in a TV show called Ballykissangel in 1998. His first movie was The War Zone in 1999. He got his first main movie role in Tigerland (2000). He became very famous after starring in Steven Spielberg's science fiction movie Minority Report (2002).

He played important characters like Bullseye in Daredevil (2003) and Alexander the Great in Alexander (2004). He also had starring roles in Miami Vice (2006) and Cassandra's Dream (2007).

Farrell won a Golden Globe Award for his role as a hitman in the comedy In Bruges (2008). He has played many different roles since then. These include the comedy Horrible Bosses (2011) and the science fiction film Total Recall (2012). He also appeared in the drama Saving Mr. Banks (2013) and the comedies Seven Psychopaths (2012) and The Lobster (2015).

He also starred in the TV series True Detective (2015). In 2022, he played Oz Cobb / Penguin in the superhero movie The Batman. He will continue this role in the TV series The Penguin (2024), for which he won another Golden Globe.

Early Life and Education

Colin James Farrell was born in Castleknock, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland, on 31 May 1976. His parents are Rita and Eamon Farrell. His father played football for Shamrock Rovers FC. Colin's uncle, Tommy Farrell, also played for Shamrock Rovers.

Colin has an older brother, Eamon Jr., and two sisters, Claudine and Catherine. Claudine now works as his personal assistant. He went to St. Brigid's National School. Then he attended the all-boys private schools Castleknock College and Gormanston College.

He tried out for the boy band Boyzone but was not chosen. Colin was inspired to act after watching Henry Thomas in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). With his brother's encouragement, he went to the Gaiety School of Acting. He left acting school when he got a role in the TV show Ballykissangel.

Starting His Acting Journey (1998–2003)

Colin Farrell had roles in TV shows like Ballykissangel and Falling for a Dancer in 1998 and 1999. His first movie was The War Zone, directed by Tim Roth. He also appeared in Ordinary Decent Criminal with Kevin Spacey.

In 2000, Colin got his first main role as Private Roland Bozz in Tigerland. The director, Joel Schumacher, chose him because of his charm. Critics praised his performance, saying he "shines" in the role.

His next American films, American Outlaws (2001) and Hart's War (2002), were not very successful. However, his films from 2002–2003 were popular. These included the thrillers Phone Booth, The Recruit, and S.W.A.T..

Critics liked his work in Phone Booth. Roger Ebert said Colin showed "energy and intensity" because he was on screen for most of the movie. In S.W.A.T., he starred with Samuel L. Jackson and Michelle Rodriguez.

In 2003, Colin starred in the comedy Intermission. This movie set a record for the highest-grossing Irish independent film for three years. In 2004, he appeared in other independent films. One was A Home at the End of the World. Roger Ebert praised his acting in this film.

Colin played Alexander the Great in Oliver Stone's movie Alexander (2004). The film received mixed reviews. Some historians praised its historical accuracy. The movie earned $167 million worldwide.

His next film was The New World (2005). He played Captain John Smith, who founded Jamestown, Virginia. He falls in love with the Native American princess Pocahontas. The film received many positive reviews.

Colin was very successful in 2006 with Miami Vice. He starred alongside Jamie Foxx. The movie earned $164 million worldwide. It was ranked among the top 50 movies of the decade by TimeOut New York.

In 2007, Colin appeared in Woody Allen's drama Cassandra's Dream. His next film was In Bruges (2008), directed by Martin McDonagh. Colin won his first Golden Globe Award for his performance in this movie.

On 11 January 2009, Colin won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for In Bruges. That same year, he appeared in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. He was one of three actors, along with Johnny Depp and Jude Law, who helped finish Heath Ledger's role after Ledger passed away. They donated their earnings to Ledger's daughter.

Colin also starred in Triage, a film about a war reporter. He lost 30 pounds for the role. In 2009, he played a supporting role in Crazy Heart with Jeff Bridges. Another 2009 film was Ondine, a fantasy-drama where he played a fisherman. Critics praised his "beautifully confident performance."

In 2010, Colin starred with Keira Knightley in the crime romance London Boulevard. In 2011, he starred in the comedy Horrible Bosses with Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman. He also played the main villain in the Fright Night remake.

Colin starred with Kate Beckinsale in Total Recall (2012), a remake of the 1990 film. His second film with Martin McDonagh, Seven Psychopaths, was released in 2012. He played a writer in this comedy with Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson.

In 2013, Colin starred in Dead Man Down, a thriller. In 2014, he starred in Winter's Tale, a film based on a novel. Critics praised his acting in this movie. He was called an "extraordinary appealing actor."

Recent Work (2022–Present)

In 2022, Colin co-starred in Thirteen Lives. This film tells the true story of the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand. Colin and the other actors did their own stunts and diving for the movie. He admitted feeling very anxious from the underwater work.

He played Oswald "Oz" Cobb / Penguin in the 2022 film The Batman. He will continue to play this character in a spin-off TV series called The Penguin on HBO in 2024. His performance earned him a Golden Globe Award. He will also return as Penguin in The Batman Part II (2027).

Also in 2022, Colin worked again with director Martin McDonagh and actor Brendan Gleeson for The Banshees of Inisherin. For this role, Colin won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor and another Golden Globe Award. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Charity Work

Colin Farrell is involved in many charity efforts. In 2007, he became a spokesperson for the Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai. He also supported the Stand Up! anti-bullying campaign in 2012. This campaign was organized by an Irish youth group called BeLonG To. Colin's brother, Eamonn, is gay, and Colin has spoken about supporting the LGBT community.

In 2015, Colin became an official Ambassador for the Homeless World Cup. This organization uses street football to help homeless people change their lives. On August 7, 2024, he announced he would start the Colin Farrell Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to his son James, who has Angelman syndrome. The organization helps adults with intellectual disabilities and their families.

Personal Life

Colin Farrell has homes in Dublin and Los Angeles. He has two sons. His first son, James Padraig Farrell, was born on 12 September 2003. James has Angelman syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes developmental delays.

His second son, Henry Tadeusz Farrell, was born on October 7, 2009. Henry's mother is Polish actress Alicja Bachleda-Curuś, who co-starred with Colin in the movie Ondine.
