Early Life and Talents
Jamie Foxx was born in Terrell, Texas. He was adopted and raised by his mother's adoptive parents, Esther Marie and Mark Talley. He often says his grandmother's influence was a big reason for his success.
Foxx started playing the piano when he was five years old. He grew up in a strict Baptist family and was a part-time pianist and choir leader at his church as a teenager. His talent for telling jokes was clear even in third grade. His teacher would let him tell jokes if the class behaved well. He went to Terrell High School, where he got good grades and played basketball and football as a quarterback. He even hoped to play for the Dallas Cowboys. He was the first player at his school to pass for over 1,000 yards. He also sang in a band called Leather and Lace. After high school, Foxx received a scholarship to United States International University, where he studied music.
Career Beginnings
Stand-up Comedy and TV Shows
Jamie Foxx first tried stand-up comedy in 1989. He chose the stage name Jamie Foxx because he felt it sounded like it could be a male or female name, and his last name was a tribute to comedian Redd Foxx. In 1991, Foxx joined the cast of In Living Color, a popular sketch comedy show.
After that, he starred in his own TV show called The Jamie Foxx Show from 1996 to 2001. He also helped create and produce this show.
First Film Roles
Foxx made his first movie appearance in the 1992 comedy Toys. His first serious acting role was in Oliver Stone's 1999 film Any Given Sunday. In this movie, he played a football quarterback, which was a good fit because of his own football background.
In 2001, Foxx acted alongside Will Smith in the movie Ali. Three years later, Foxx played a taxi driver named Max Durocher in the movie Collateral with Tom Cruise. Critics really liked his performance in Collateral, and he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
