Faheem Rashad Najm (born September 30, 1984), who is known by his stage name T-Pain, is an American singer and rapper. He is famous for his creative use of Auto-Tune, a tool that changes the pitch of a voice. He used it to create a unique, electronic sound in his music.
By mixing Auto-Tune with R&B and hip-hop music, T-Pain became a major star in the 2000s. Many other famous artists, like Kanye West and Travis Scott, were inspired by his style and used Auto-Tune in their own songs.
T-Pain has won two Grammy Awards and has had many hit songs. Some of his biggest hits include "Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin')" and his features on "Low" by Flo Rida and "Good Life" by Kanye West. Besides music, he started his own record label, Nappy Boy Entertainment, and has acted in movies and TV shows.

Early Life and First Steps in Music
T-Pain, whose real name is Faheem Rashad Najm, grew up in Tallahassee, Florida. His family was very involved in their community. His father, Shasheem, founded a program called Homeboyz to Men.
His interest in music started when he was only three years old. A family friend, gospel jazz artist Ben Tankard, let him play with the equipment in his recording studio. By the time he was ten, T-Pain had turned his own bedroom into a small music studio with a keyboard, a beat machine, and a recorder.
Music Career
1999–2006: Starting Out and First Album
T-Pain's stage name stands for "Tallahassee Pain." He chose it because of the challenges he faced growing up there. He first joined a rap group called Nappy Headz in 1999. Later, he made a cover of the song "Locked Up" by the artist Akon.
Akon heard T-Pain's version and was so impressed that he offered him a record deal with his label, Konvict Muzik. T-Pain accepted because Akon promised to be a mentor to him in the music industry.
In 2005, T-Pain released his first album, Rappa Ternt Sanga. The album included the hit singles "I'm Sprung" and "I'm 'n Luv (wit a ...)". Both songs were very successful, reaching the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which tracks the most popular songs in the U.S.
2007–2008: Rise to Fame with Epiphany
T-Pain's second album, Epiphany, came out in 2007 and was a huge success. It went straight to number one on the Billboard 200 album chart. The album's main single, "Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin')" featuring Yung Joc, also became a number-one hit.
Another popular song from the album was "Bartender", which featured Akon. During this time, T-Pain also appeared as a guest on many other artists' hit songs. These included "Kiss Kiss" by Chris Brown, "Low" by Flo Rida, and "Good Life" by Kanye West.
His work on "Good Life" earned him a Grammy Award for Best Rap Song in 2008. For a couple of weeks in 2007, T-Pain was featured on four different songs in the top ten at the same time.
2008–2009: Three Ringz and Collaborations
In 2008, T-Pain released his third album, Three Ringz. This was the first album released on his own record label, Nappy Boy Entertainment. The album reached number four on the Billboard 200 chart.
The most popular single from this album was "Can't Believe It", which featured rapper Lil Wayne. He also had hits with "Chopped 'n' ..." and "Freeze".
In 2009, he appeared in a popular SNL Digital Short with the group The Lonely Island for their song "I'm on a Boat". The song was a viral hit and was nominated for a Grammy Award.
2009–2012: Revolver and New Ventures
T-Pain continued to be a popular featured artist, appearing on hit songs like "All I Do Is Win" by DJ Khaled and "Hey Baby (Drop It to the Floor)" by Pitbull.
In 2011, he released his fourth album, Revolver. The album included the top-ten single "5 O'Clock", which featured Wiz Khalifa and Lily Allen.
During this period, T-Pain also explored acting. He appeared in the movie Lottery Ticket and voiced a character in the animated TV special Freaknik: The Musical.
2013–2019: New Albums and The Masked Singer
After a break, T-Pain returned with his fifth album, Oblivion, in 2017. Two years later, in 2019, he released a surprise album called 1UP.
That same year, T-Pain participated in the TV show The Masked Singer. He performed in a monster costume and amazed the judges and audience with his powerful singing voice without Auto-Tune. He was crowned the winner of the first season.
2023–present: On Top of the Covers
In 2023, T-Pain released a special album called On Top of the Covers. On this album, he sang his own versions of famous songs by other artists, like "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey and "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath. What made this album special was that he did not use any Auto-Tune, showing off his natural singing talent.
Musical Style and Auto-Tune
T-Pain is famous for popularizing the use of Auto-Tune in hip-hop and R&B music. Auto-Tune is a software that can correct the pitch of a singer's voice. T-Pain used it in a creative way to make his voice sound robotic and unique.
He was inspired to use the effect after hearing it on a remix of a Jennifer Lopez song. While some artists had used it before, T-Pain made it his signature sound. Many artists, including Kanye West and Lil Wayne, started using Auto-Tune after seeing his success.
In 2009, the rapper Jay-Z released a song called "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)," which criticized how many artists were using the effect. Although some people thought it was a negative comment about T-Pain, he said he liked the song and understood the criticism. He continues to use Auto-Tune as part of his artistic style.

T-Pain has appeared in many TV shows and movies. He acted in the comedy film Lottery Ticket and has done voice work for shows like The Cleveland Show and Squidbillies. He also hosted his own show on the Fuse channel called T-Pain's School of Business, where he met with young business owners.

T-Pain is a big fan of video games and is a popular streamer on the website Twitch. He plays games for his fans and has over a million followers. He has also said he is involved with the video game Grand Theft Auto VI.
