Flo Rida's Music Journey
Growing Up and Starting Out (1979–2006)
Tramar Lacel Dillard was born on September 16, 1979. He grew up in Miami Gardens, Florida. He has seven sisters, including a twin sister. Some of his sisters sang in a local gospel group.
When he was in ninth grade, Flo Rida joined a rap group called the GroundHoggz. They recorded music in underground studios. This group stayed together for eight years. Early in his career, his sister Julia passed away. This sad event made Flo Rida even more determined to succeed in music. He told MTV he would "do this for my sister."
Later, rapper Fresh Kid Ice noticed Flo Rida. He asked Flo Rida to be his "hype man" (someone who helps excite the crowd). Flo Rida learned a lot during this time. He even appeared on Fresh Kid Ice's album Freaky Chinese in 2004.
Flo Rida tried to get signed by major record labels but faced many rejections. After high school, he studied business for a short time. He then returned to Florida to chase his music dream. This happened after an independent label, Poe Boy Entertainment, called him.
In 2000, Flo Rida worked with The Eastside Boyz. By 2004, he was working with other Southern hip hop artists. These included Rick Ross, Trina, T-Pain, and Trick Daddy. His first important song was "Birthday", featuring Rick Ross. He also appeared on DJ Khaled's album We the Best in 2007.
First Album Success: Mail on Sunday (2007–2008)
Flo Rida's first album, Mail on Sunday, came out on March 18, 2008. The first song from the album was "Low", featuring T-Pain. This song was also in the movie Step Up 2: The Streets. "Low" became a huge hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Other popular songs from the album included "Elevator" (with Timbaland), "In the Ayer" (with will.i.am), and "Roll" (with Sean Kingston). Many famous artists were on Mail on Sunday. These included Rick Ross, Trey Songz, Lil Wayne, and Birdman.

More Hits with R.O.O.T.S. (2009–2010)
Flo Rida started working on his second album, R.O.O.T.S., just nine months after his first. It was released on March 31, 2009. The first song, "Right Round" featuring Kesha, was a massive hit. It jumped to the top spot in one week.
"Right Round" broke a record for the most digital sales in one week in the US. It sold 636,000 copies, beating Flo Rida's own record set by "Low." The song used a sample from "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" by Dead or Alive. "Right Round" also became Flo Rida's first number-one song in the United Kingdom.
The next song from the album was "Sugar", featuring Wynter Gordon. It reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100. "Jump" (with Nelly Furtado) and "Be on You" (with Ne-Yo) were also released. R.O.O.T.S. sold 55,000 copies in its first week. By the end of 2009, it was the eighth best-selling rap album of the year in the US.
Flo Rida continued to collaborate with other artists. He worked with Lady Gaga and Three 6 Mafia. He also featured on "Bad Boys" by Alexandra Burke. This song became a number-one hit in the UK for both artists.
