Jason Joel Desrouleaux (born September 21, 1989), known as Jason Derulo, is an American singer, songwriter, and dancer. Since starting his solo career in 2009, he has sold over 250 million singles worldwide. He has also earned fourteen platinum singles in the US, meaning his songs sold millions of copies.

After writing songs for many other artists, Jason Derulo signed with the record label Beluga Heights. This label was owned by producer J. R. Rotem. When Beluga Heights joined Warner Music Group, Derulo became a recording artist. He released his first song, "Whatcha Say", in May 2009. This song sold over five million digital copies and reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. He then released other popular songs like "In My Head" and "Ridin' Solo". His first album, Jason Derulo, came out in 2010. His second album, Future History (2011), included the hit "Don't Wanna Go Home". His third album, Tattoos (2013), featured worldwide hits like "Trumpets" and "Wiggle".

Jason Derulo's fourth album, Everything Is 4 (2015), had the song "Want to Want Me". This song became a top-ten hit in the US and a number-one hit in the UK. In 2020, he released "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)" with producer Jawsh 685. This song became a global hit. Early Life and Beginnings

Jason Derulo was born in Miramar, Florida. His parents are from Haiti. His first language was Haitian Creole. He started singing when he was very young. He went to performing arts schools in Florida. He wrote his first song at the age of eight. His writing skills became well-known when he was a teenager. He also wrote a song called "Bossy" for the rapper Birdman. He even sang on that song, showing his talent as a singer.

His stage name, "Derulo", is a simpler way to say his last name, Desrouleaux.

Before becoming a solo artist, Jason Derulo wrote songs for famous artists like Diddy and Lil Wayne. He also wanted to be a performer himself. He went to performing arts schools and improved his singing and dancing. He also acted in theater shows. In 2006, he won the grand prize on the TV show Showtime at the Apollo. Music producer J.R. Rotem discovered him and signed him to his record label, Beluga Heights Records.

J.R. Rotem said that Jason Derulo works very hard. He said, "Jason Derulo has one of the most impressive work ethics I've ever come across – he just keeps knocking out songs in the studio. That's an amazing quality."

On August 4, 2009, Jason released his first song, "Whatcha Say". This song used a sample from the Imogen Heap song "Hide and Seek". He shared his journey of making the album through videos on his website. The first song from the album, "Don't Wanna Go Home", came out on May 20, 2011. It became number one in the UK.

Jason Derulo planned a tour in the UK for February 2012. However, on January 3, 2012, he broke a bone in his neck while practicing for his tour. Because of this, he had to cancel all his tour dates.

On April 16, 2013, Jason Derulo released his song "The Other Side". It reached number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. He announced that his third album would be called Tattoos. The album was released on September 24, 2013. The album included a song with the rapper 2 Chainz.

The song "Marry Me" was released as the second song from the album in the US. Six months after Tattoos was released, Jason Derulo announced a new album. It was called Talk Dirty and came out on April 15, 2014. This album had four new songs and seven songs from Tattoos.

Everything Is 4 and Platinum Hits

On January 22, 2015, Jason Derulo was announced as a judge for the 12th season of So You Think You Can Dance. He joined judges Paula Abdul and Nigel Lythgoe.

On March 9, he released "Want to Want Me". This was the first song from his fourth album, Everything Is 4. "Want To Want Me" became very popular on radio stations. It reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the UK Singles Chart. The music video for his second song, "Cheyenne", came out on June 30, 2015.

On June 29, Derulo announced his first album of greatest hits, called Platinum Hits. It was released on July 29, 2016. It included a new song called "Kiss the Sky", which was on the soundtrack for the movie Storks. The album features 11 songs that have sold millions of copies.

New Music and TikTok Fame

On February 24, 2017, Jason Derulo released a new song called "Swalla". It featured Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign. He later announced his next album would be called 777. In 2018, he released "Goodbye" with David Guetta, Nicki Minaj, and Willy William. In 2019, he released "Let's Shut Up & Dance" with Lay Zhang and NCT 127. He also released "Mamacita" (featuring Farruko) and "Too Hot". He said he would release two EPs (smaller albums) instead of a full album. 2Sides (Side 1) was released on November 8, 2019. Jason Derulo also starred as Rum Tum Tugger in the movie Cats, which came out on December 20, 2019.

In May 2020, Derulo left his record label, Warner Bros. Records. He then released "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)" with Jawsh 685. This song became very popular on TikTok. Jason Derulo signed with Atlantic Records in March 2021. In May, he was featured on a remix of "Jalebi Baby" by singer Tesher. On September 3, Derulo released his new song "Acapulco". In March 2023, he became a judge for the Australian version of The Voice. Later that month, he played Ron Isley in the movie Spinning Gold. On May 18, 2023, Derulo released "When Love Sucks", which features singer Dido.

Jason Derulo started posting videos on TikTok after his nieces and nephews showed him the app. His account has become one of the most-followed on the platform.

On February 16, 2024, he released his fifth album, Nu King. This was his first studio album since Everything is 4 (2015). The album includes many of his popular songs released over the years, such as "Take You Dancing", "Love Not War (The Tampa Beat)", and "Lifestyle". It also features his song "Hands on Me" with Meghan Trainor.

His Music Style

Jason Derulo's music is mostly pop, but it also has influences from R&B and hip-hop. He has said that Michael Jackson is his biggest inspiration. Derulo stated, "He is the reason I am who I am today. When I was 4 years old, I saw him for the first time. I saw how he moved the crowd and how people were just so touched." Other artists who have influenced him include Elvis Presley, Madonna, Prince, Usher, and Justin Timberlake.

Personal Life

Jason Derulo and singer Jordin Sparks dated for three years. They ended their relationship in September 2014. On May 8, 2021, he had a son with his girlfriend Jena Frumes. They broke up a few months later. Jason Derulo has three nieces.

He is also a co-owner of the Omaha Supernovas. This is a professional women's volleyball team.
