The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) is a group that represents the music industry in Australia. It was started in the 1970s by six big record companies. ARIA helps manage and give out licences and money (royalties) for music.
ARIA has more than 100 members. These include small music labels run by a few people, as well as very large companies. A board of directors, made up of leaders from record companies, runs ARIA.

History of ARIA
In 1956, a group called the Association of Australian Record Manufacturers (AARM) was formed. This group was later replaced in the 1970s by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). Six major record companies in Australia helped create ARIA. These companies included EMI, Festival Records, CBS (now Sony Music), RCA, WEA (now Warner Music Group), and Polygram (now Universal).
Over time, smaller record companies joined ARIA. Today, ARIA has over 100 members. A board of directors, which includes important people from both big and small record companies, manages the association.
ARIA Music Charts
The ARIA Charts are the official music sales charts in Australia. ARIA releases these charts every week. They show which songs and albums are selling the most. The charts include both physical sales (like CDs) and digital sales (like downloads) from stores across Australia.
The very first national top 50 chart was printed for record stores on 10 July 1983. It was called the Countdown chart. ARIA started putting together its own charts from 13 June 1988. Since then, the ARIA Charts have been the official Australian music charts.
ARIA Music Awards
The ARIA Music Awards are big annual events that celebrate Australian music. These awards have been held every year since 1987. They include awards for different music styles and popular songs. There are also special awards for fine arts, technical work, and lifetime achievements.
Before ARIA started its own awards, an Australian TV show called Countdown had its own music awards. ARIA helped with some of the voting for these awards. However, after some disagreements at the 1985 Countdown awards, ARIA decided to create its own awards.
Since 1987, ARIA has managed its own ARIA Music Awards. These awards are chosen by people in the music industry. They aim to "recognize excellent and new ideas in all types of Australian music." In 1988, ARIA also started the ARIA Hall of Fame. This honors Australian musicians who have made a big impact in Australia or around the world.
ARIA Certifications
ARIA gives out special awards to music that sells a lot of copies. These awards are called Gold, Platinum, and Diamond.
Current Award Levels
- A song or album gets a Gold award if 35,000 copies are sent to stores.
- It gets a Platinum award if 70,000 copies are sent to stores.
- The Diamond award was created in 2015 for 500,000 sales or shipments. For albums, this award also counts sales of individual songs from the album.
For music DVDs, a Gold award means 7,500 copies were sent out. A Platinum award means 15,000 copies were sent out.

Criticisms of ARIA
Like many groups in the music industry, ARIA has faced some criticism.
ARIA works to protect music from being copied or shared without permission. They have run advertising campaigns, especially in cinemas, to remind people about this. ARIA has also taken steps to stop illegal sharing of music online.
Some people have also criticized ARIA for not recognizing contestants from shows like Australian Idol enough in their ARIA Awards.
