The Billboard Latin Music Awards are a big event in the Latin music world. They celebrate the most popular songs, albums, and artists based on how well they sell and how much they are played on the radio. These awards come from Billboard magazine, which is famous for tracking music success. The Billboard Latin Music Awards are the longest-running awards in the Latin music industry. The award shows happen during the same week as Latinfest+, a special conference for Latin music.

History of the Awards
The very first award ceremony took place in 1994. It was held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Miami, Florida. Back then, it was called the Latin Music Awards. The goal was to celebrate all kinds of Latin music talent, from different styles like pop, tropical/salsa, regional Mexican, rap, rock, and jazz.
How Winners Are Chosen
Winners are picked based on points. These points come from how well songs and albums do on Billboard magazine's music charts. These charts track radio plays and sales. The awards cover music released over one year, usually from March to March.
Special Honors Introduced
Over the years, new special awards were added:
- In 1994, the Latin Music Hall of Fame and the Lifetime Achievement Award were created. These awards honor artists who have had a huge impact on Latin music throughout their careers.
- In 1996, the Spirit of Hope Award was introduced. This award recognizes artists who do amazing charity and humanitarian work outside of their music.
- Since 2021, the Billboard Icon Award has also been given out. This award celebrates artists who are true icons in the music world.
- In 2022, the Legend Award was added. It goes to artists whose music has made them famous and who have had a long-lasting career.
Famous Hosts and First Televised Show
The 1997 ceremony was the first to have hosts, Daisy Fuentes and Herb Alpert. In 1999, the awards show was shown on TV for the first time. It was broadcast from the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida.
