The Billboard Latin Music Awards are a big celebration of Latin music. They grew from the main Billboard Music Awards. These awards come from Billboard magazine, which tracks how well music sells and how often it's played on the radio. The Billboard Latin Music Awards are the oldest awards in the Latin music world. The award shows happen during the same week as Latinfest+, which used to be called the Billboard Latin Music Conference.

History of the Awards

The first award show happened in 1994. It was held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Miami, Florida. Back then, it was called the Latin Music Awards. The goal was to celebrate all kinds of Latin music and artists.

Winners were chosen based on how many points their songs and albums earned. These points came from Billboard magazine's radio and sales charts. The awards covered music released between March 6, 1993, and March 5, 1994.

The first awards recognized different types of Latin music. These included pop, tropical/salsa, regional Mexican, rap, rock, and jazz.

Special Awards Introduced

The first ceremony also started some special awards. These were chosen by the Billboard team.

  • The Latin Music Hall of Fame honors artists who have had amazing careers in Latin music.
  • The Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates a musician who has greatly helped the Latin music genre grow.

In 1996, the Spirit of Hope Award was added. This award honors artists who do great charity work outside of their music.

The 1997 show was the first to have hosts. These hosts were Daisy Fuentes and Herb Alpert. In 1999, the awards show was shown on TV for the first time. It was broadcast from the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida.

Since 2021, the Billboard Icon Award has also been given out. This award used to be only for the main Billboard Music Awards. In 2022, the Legend Award was introduced. It goes to artists whose music has made them famous and whose careers have lasted a very long time.

Top Winners

Many artists have won these awards over the years. Enrique Iglesias has won the most, with 47 awards. The Colombian singer Shakira is the most awarded female artist, with 44 wins.

Award Ceremonies

The Billboard Latin Music Awards happen every year. They celebrate the best in Latin music from the past year. Many famous artists have won awards for their songs and albums. The show often features exciting performances and special guests.
