A Controversial Meeting

In 2012, del Castillo wrote a message online about social problems in Mexico. In her message, she mentioned Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, a well-known figure. She suggested he should use his influence to do good things.

Guzmán's lawyers later contacted her about making a movie about his life. In 2015, she helped arrange a meeting between American actor Sean Penn and Guzmán. Del Castillo said she did not know Penn planned to interview him.

This meeting caused a lot of controversy. The Mexican government investigated the situation, and del Castillo had to speak with officials. For a few years, she could not return to Mexico. Because of this, her Netflix show Ingobernable had to be filmed in San Diego instead of Mexico. She was able to return to Mexico in December 2018.

In 2017, Netflix released a documentary called The Day I Met El Chapo: The Kate del Castillo Story, where she tells her side of the story.
