Early in his career, Lupillo performed under the name "El Torito." As he became more popular, he changed his stage name to "El Toro del Corrido." This was a tribute to his uncle, who was a famous boxer named El Toro Rivera. By 1999, he decided to use the name "Lupillo Rivera."
