Early Life and Start in Music
Ye was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 8, 1977. When he was three, his parents divorced, and he moved to Chicago, Illinois, with his mother. His father, Ray West, was a photojournalist and later became a Christian counselor. Ye's mother, Donda C. West, was an English professor and later became his manager.
Ye grew up in a middle-class family. When he was 10, he moved with his mother to Nanjing, China, where she taught at a university. He was the only foreign student in his class and quickly learned the language.
Ye showed a talent for art early on. He started writing poetry at age five and began rapping in third grade. By seventh grade, he was making music and selling it to other artists. He met producer No I.D., who became his friend and mentor. After high school, Ye went to art school and then studied English at Chicago State University. At age 20, he left college to focus on his music career.
Musical Career and Success

After leaving college, Ye started producing music for artists in Chicago. He became an in-house producer for Roc-A-Fella Records. He helped produce albums like Jay-Z's The Blueprint (2001). Later, he signed with the label as a recording artist.
Ye's first album, The College Dropout (2004), was highly praised. It included the hit song "Slow Jamz," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He had four other number-one singles: "Gold Digger" (2005), "Stronger" (2007), "E.T." (2011), and "Carnival" (2024).
His next albums, Late Registration (2005) and Graduation (2007), both debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Graduation became his most successful album at the time. Many of his albums, like 808s & Heartbreak (2008), My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010), and The Life of Pablo (2016), sold millions of copies.
More recently, albums like Ye (2018), Jesus Is King (2019), and Donda (2021) also debuted at number one. In 2023, Ye began working on new music, including a collaborative album with Ty Dolla Sign. They released the song "Vultures" in November 2023.
Musical Style
Ye's music career is known for constantly changing styles and sounds.
On his first album, The College Dropout (2004), he created his unique style. This included complex hip-hop beats and lyrics about everyday topics. He talked about things like education, money, self-awareness, and his experiences in the music industry. This was different from the "gangsta rap" style that was popular then.
Over time, Ye has explored many different music genres. He has taken inspiration from chamber pop on Late Registration (2005), arena rock on Graduation (2007), and electronic pop on 808s & Heartbreak (2008). He also used sounds from acid-house and industrial rap on Yeezus (2013). More recently, he has explored gospel and Christian rap on albums like The Life of Pablo (2016), Jesus Is King (2019), and Donda (2021).
