Symere Bysil Woods (born July 31, 1995), known by their stage name Lil Uzi Vert, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. They are known for their unique style that mixes different types of rap music.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lil Uzi Vert first became known after releasing the mixtape Luv Is Rage in 2015. This led to a record deal with Atlantic Records. They became even more famous with their 2016 single "Money Longer".

Lil Uzi Vert was a guest artist on the hit song "Bad and Boujee" by Migos, which went to number one on the charts. Their own song, "XO Tour Llif3", became a top ten hit and won an MTV Video Music Award.

Their first album, Luv Is Rage 2 (2017), started at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Their next two albums, Eternal Atake (2020) and Pink Tape (2023), also debuted at number one. This made them one of the few hip-hop artists to have their first three albums reach the top spot.

Early Life

Symere Bysil Woods was born in the Francisville neighborhood of North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Growing up, they listened to artists like Mike Jones and the Ying Yang Twins. Later, they were influenced by rappers like Wiz Khalifa and Meek Mill.

When they were 13, they also started listening to rock bands like Marilyn Manson, Paramore, and My Chemical Romance. This mix of influences helped shape their unique musical style.

After leaving school, Woods worked for a short time at a store. This experience, along with getting their first face tattoo, motivated them to focus seriously on their rap career.

Career

2010–2015: How It All Started

Woods began rapping in tenth grade after hearing a classmate freestyle. At first, Woods said they were just a "regular kid" and didn't plan to rap. They formed a music group called Steaktown with friends.

They later chose the name Lil Uzi Vert because someone said their rap flow was "fast, like a machine gun." Their first project, an EP called Purple Thoughtz Vol. 1, was released in 2014. The project got the attention of people in the music industry, including the ASAP Mob.

Producer Don Cannon heard one of Woods' songs on the radio and signed them. Woods then signed a record deal with Atlantic Records. They released their second mixtape, Luv Is Rage, in 2015. It featured popular rappers like Wiz Khalifa and Young Thug and was praised by music blogs.

2016: A Breakthrough Year

In 2016, Lil Uzi Vert's career took off. They released the single "Money Longer", which became their first song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Their third mixtape, Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World, came out in April 2016. It reached number 37 on the Billboard 200 chart and was later certified gold. Another song from the mixtape, "You Was Right", also became a hit.

That same year, XXL magazine featured Lil Uzi Vert in its "2016 Freshman Class." This is a special issue that highlights new and promising rappers. This feature helped them gain even more fans. They released another mixtape, The Perfect LUV Tape, on their 22nd birthday.

They also released the song "XO Tour Llif3", which became a huge hit. It started on SoundCloud and became so popular that it was officially released as a single. The song reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been certified six-times platinum.

"XO Tour Llif3" was the lead single for their debut studio album, Luv Is Rage 2. The album was released in August 2017 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. It included other hit songs like "The Way Life Goes" and "Sauce It Up".

2018–2020: Eternal Atake and More Music

In July 2018, Woods announced their second studio album, Eternal Atake. Fans were very excited, but the album's release was delayed. In the meantime, they released the single "New Patek".

After signing with Roc Nation in 2019, they released two promotional singles, "Sanguine Paradise" and "That's a Rack". Finally, on March 6, 2020, Eternal Atake was released. It went straight to number one on the Billboard 200.

Just a week later, Woods released a deluxe version of the album. It was a sequel to their 2016 mixtape and was called Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World 2. It had 14 new tracks and featured artists like Chief Keef, Future, and Young Thug. Later that year, they released a collaborative album with Future called Pluto x Baby Pluto.

In 2021, Lil Uzi Vert announced their next album would be called The Pink Tape. Before its release, they dropped an EP called Red & White in July 2022.

In October 2022, they released the single "Just Wanna Rock". The song became a viral hit on TikTok and reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Pink Tape was released on June 30, 2023. The album featured artists like Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, and the rock band Bring Me the Horizon. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making it the first hip-hop album of 2023 to top the chart. This achievement made Woods one of only three hip-hop artists in the 21st century to have their first three albums debut at number one.

Musical Style

Lil Uzi Vert's music is often described as avant-garde, meaning it is new and experimental. Their style has been compared to rock music, and they are often called an "emo rap" or "punk rap" artist. This is because their lyrics sometimes talk about emotions and their sound can be energetic like punk music.

They are also known for their unique fashion, which includes facial tattoos, piercings, and colorful hairstyles. Spin magazine said Woods has "solidified [their] spot as one to watch" with their "signature rapid delivery."

Lil Uzi Vert has said that their "greatest inspiration" is Marilyn Manson. They are also fans of the band Paramore and its lead singer, Hayley Williams. Other influences include Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, and Lil Wayne.

Personal Life

From 2014 to 2017, Woods was in a relationship with fashion designer Brittany Byrd. She was a student at the Parsons School of Design when they met. Woods has written several songs about her. Since 2019, Woods has been in a relationship with JT from the hip-hop group City Girls.

In July 2022, Woods announced that they use they/them pronouns. In 2023, they confirmed that they identify as gender-nonconforming.

In 2021, Woods got a 10-carat pink diamond implanted in their forehead. They said the idea was inspired by the cartoon Steven Universe. The diamond was later removed. During a performance, fans pulled it out while Woods was crowd surfing, but they were not seriously hurt and still have the diamond.
