The Grammy Award for Album of the Year is a special prize given out every year at the Grammy Awards. It is presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States. This award celebrates the best complete music albums.
It honors the album's artistic and technical quality. This means it's not just about how many copies were sold or how popular it was on the charts. Many people call it "The Big Award" because it is seen as the most important Grammy. It is one of the four main awards given out since the first Grammy Awards in 1959. The other three are Best New Artist, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year.

Who Gets the Award?
When an album wins, it's not just the main artist who gets a trophy. The award is shared with many people who helped create the album. This includes featured artists, producers, songwriters, and the engineers who mixed and mastered the sound.
The rules for who gets an award have changed over time. At first, only the main artist received it. Later, producers and engineers were added. Today, many key people who worked on the album are honored. This shows that making a great album is a team effort.
It's important to know that Album of the Year is for a whole album. The Record of the Year award is for just one song.

How Winners Are Chosen
The process for choosing the winner involves thousands of music experts. First, members of the Recording Academy vote for their favorite albums. This creates a long list of potential nominees.
For many years, a special committee would review the top 20 albums and pick the final nominees. However, this rule was changed in 2021. Now, all voting members choose the nominees directly.
The number of nominees has also changed. It was increased from five to eight in 2019, and then to ten in 2022. Starting in 2024, the number of nominees was set back to eight. After the nominees are announced, all members vote one more time to choose the final winner.
