Jordan Terrell Carter (born September 13, 1995 or 1996), who is known by his stage name Playboi Carti, is an American rapper. He is famous for his unique rapping style and fashion. Many people see him as an important figure in modern hip hop and one of the first artists to create the "rage" style of music.

He first signed with the record label Awful Records in 2014. Two years later, he joined ASAP Mob's label, AWGE, and Interscope Records. Carter became very popular after releasing his first mixtape, Playboi Carti, in 2017. It included the hit songs "Magnolia" and "Wokeuplikethis".

Carter's first studio album, Die Lit (2018), was also a big success. His second album, Whole Lotta Red (2020), went to number one on the charts and received great reviews. In 2024, he was a featured artist on the song "Carnival" by ¥$, which became his first song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. His third album, Music (2025), also debuted at number one.

In 2019, Carter started his own record label and music group. He has signed other rappers from Atlanta, like Ken Carson and Destroy Lonely, to his label.

Early Life

Jordan Terrell Carter was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in the nearby city of Riverdale. He has one older brother. From a young age, Carter was very independent and knew what he wanted to do. He attended North Springs Charter High School in Sandy Springs.

Before he became a rapper, Carter wanted to be an NBA star. He was a talented basketball player but decided to stop playing after a disagreement with his coach. After that, he put all his energy into music. He would often spend his time working on songs or at his job at H&M.

Carter also had a unique sense of style from an early age. He enjoyed shopping at thrift stores to find interesting clothes. He told Vogue magazine that other kids sometimes made fun of his fashion choices, like wearing colorful skinny jeans.

To focus on his music career, Carter decided to move to New York City. There, he met members of the famous music group ASAP Mob. A member named ASAP Bari introduced him to ASAP Rocky. This was a big moment for Carter's career, and he even traveled with Rocky to Texas.

In 2015, Carter's songs "Broke Boi" and "Fetti" became very popular on SoundCloud. He also worked with many other artists in Atlanta's rap scene. He toured with ASAP Ferg and Lil Uzi Vert, which led to him signing a deal with Interscope Records. In 2016, he officially joined ASAP Mob's label, AWGE.

Fashion and Modeling

Carter's fashion is a big part of his image. He calls himself a "thrift store kid" because he loves wearing vintage clothes. The magazine GQ called him a "leader of a youth style."

His favorite designer is Raf Simons. Carter was featured on the ASAP Mob song "Raf," which was a tribute to the designer. He has said that Kanye West and ASAP Rocky are his biggest fashion inspirations.

Artistry

Influences and Musical Style

Carter has said that ASAP Rocky, Kanye West, and MF Doom (pictured from left to right) are some of his biggest musical inspirations.

Carter has been influenced by many different artists, including ASAP Rocky, Kanye West, Jay-Z, and even rock bands like the Sex Pistols and Kiss. He is known for having a "rock star" personality. His music is often described as playful, energetic, and melodic.

Most of Carter's lyrics are freestyled, meaning he makes them up on the spot. This was inspired by the rapper Lil Wayne. Carter's music focuses more on the overall feeling and sound rather than just the words. One critic said that his music is "less about lyricism and more about atmosphere."

His style is often called "mumble rap". As his career has grown, he has started to experiment with new sounds. His album Whole Lotta Red included sounds inspired by punk and metal music.

Voice

Carter is known for his unique "baby voice" technique, where he raps in a high-pitched voice with unclear words. You can hear this style on songs like "Earfquake" with Tyler, the Creator.

On his album Whole Lotta Red and in more recent songs, he has also used a rough, "deep voice" inspired by metal music. His unique style and use of darker, mysterious themes have helped him create an exciting experience for his fans.

Personal Life

In 2017, Carter briefly dated American model Blac Chyna. From 2018 to 2019, he was in a relationship with Australian rapper Iggy Azalea. In 2020, they had a son named Onyx. The couple later separated. In December 2023, Carter shared that he has a second child, a daughter named Yves.

Carter has asthma. As of 2019, he lives and works in the Atlanta area.
