Growing Up and Starting Music
Leland Tyler Wayne was born on September 16, 1993. He grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He went to Parkway North High School. Leland has four brothers and sisters.
He briefly played bass guitar in his middle school band. At age 13, in seventh grade, he started making music beats. This happened after his mom bought him a laptop. He also got a music software called FruityLoops. In high school, he would make about five beats every day.
At first, Leland wanted to be a rapper. He started making beats so he would have music for his own raps. But soon, he focused all his energy on making hip-hop beats for others. As he got better, he used social media like Twitter to connect with famous rap artists. He also sent his beats to them hoping they would use his music.
Building a Music Career
Early Days: 2009–2012
During high school, Metro Boomin's mother often drove him. They would travel over eight hours from St. Louis to Atlanta, Georgia. This was so he could work with artists he met online. One of the first artists he worked with was Tay Don. This led him to meet OJ da Juiceman and Gucci Mane.
Soon after, he met the Atlanta rapper Future. Future became one of his most frequent music partners. After finishing high school, Metro Boomin moved to Atlanta. While he mainly works in hip hop, he has also produced pop and R&B songs. For example, he produced four songs for The Weeknd's album After Hours. He also remixed the pop song "Hold Me Now" for a Gap ad.
Producer Tags
In hip hop, producers often use a "producer tag." This is a short sound or phrase at the start of a song. It helps listeners know who made the beat.
His first tag was "This beat is so, so Metro." He used it in songs around 2013–2014.
Metro's most famous tag is "If Young Metro don't trust you I'm gon' shoot you." Future says this phrase. It first appeared in Drake and Future's 2015 song, "Jumpman". It became very well known after being used in Kanye West's song "Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1".
Another popular tag is "Young Metro, young Metro, young Metro." Future also says this. Metro often refers to "3x" or "Young Metro 3x" because of this tag.
Another tag is simply "Metro!" Young Thug first said this on his song "Hercules." You can hear this tag a lot in the song "Mr. Right Now" by 21 Savage and Drake. It also appears many times in Metro's album Heroes & Villains. This tag was also used in the popular "Re-OG" Fortnite lobby music.
