Leland Tyler Wayne (born September 16, 1993), who is known by his stage name Metro Boomin, is an American record producer. A record producer helps artists create their music, from the beat to the final sound. He is famous for his dark and exciting production style. Many people see him as one of the most important producers in modern hip-hop and trap music.

He has made hit songs for some of the biggest names in music. These artists include Future, Post Malone, 21 Savage, Kanye West, the Weeknd, and Drake.

Metro Boomin grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He started making music in 2009 when he was only 16. In 2012, he moved to Atlanta for college but soon focused on music full-time. He worked with many Atlanta artists like Future, Young Thug, and Migos. He became very well-known after co-producing the hit song "Tuesday" in 2014.

By 2016, he had produced many more successful songs. These included "Jumpman" by Drake and Future and "Bad and Boujee" by Migos, which became his first number-one hit. He also produced huge hits like "Congratulations" by Post Malone and "Mask Off" by Future.

As a lead artist, Metro Boomin has released several popular albums. His albums Not All Heroes Wear Capes (2018) and Heroes & Villains (2022) both reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. He also had number-one albums with Future, called We Don't Trust You and We Still Don't Trust You (both 2024). The song "Like That" from We Don't Trust You became his first number-one song as a lead artist.

Early Life

Leland Tyler Wayne was born on September 16, 1993, in St. Louis, Missouri. He went to Parkway North High School. He has four siblings.

He first got into music by playing bass guitar in his middle school band. When he was 13, his mom bought him a laptop. He got a copy of a music-making program called FL Studio. He taught himself how to use it and was soon making five beats a day in high school.

At first, he wanted to be a rapper and made beats for himself. But he soon realized he loved producing more. He used social media like Twitter to connect with famous rappers and send them his beats.

Career

2009–2016: Starting Out and Rising to Fame

While still in high school, Metro Boomin's mother would drive him from St. Louis to Atlanta. This was an eight-hour trip so he could work with artists he met online. He started working with rappers like OJ da Juiceman and Gucci Mane. Soon, he met Future, and they became regular partners in music.

After high school, Metro moved to Atlanta to study Business Management at Morehouse College. But making music took up so much time that he left college after one semester to focus on his career. He produced several songs for Future's albums, including the hit single "Karate Chop".

In 2013, he released his first mixtape, 19 & Boomin. In 2014, he produced a track on Nicki Minaj's album The Pinkprint. He also was the executive producer for Future's mixtape Monster. An executive producer helps guide the overall vision and sound of a project.

By 2016, Metro Boomin was one of the hottest producers in hip-hop. He produced huge hits like "Jumpman" by Drake and Future and "Bad and Boujee" by Migos. He also worked on Kanye West's album The Life of Pablo and released the popular EP Savage Mode with 21 Savage. He won Producer of the Year at the BET Hip Hop Awards.

2017: Many Collaborations

In 2017, Metro Boomin was very busy working with other artists. He released a mixtape called Perfect Timing with the rapper Nav.

On Halloween, he dropped a surprise album with rappers 21 Savage and Offset called Without Warning. The song "Ric Flair Drip" from this album became very popular.

Just a month later, he released another album, Double or Nothing, with rapper Big Sean. This year showed how well he could work with different artists to create hit music.

2018–2021: Solo Success and More Hits

In April 2018, Metro Boomin joked on his Instagram that he was "retired." But he quickly returned to music. He worked on albums for Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne.

In November 2018, he released his first solo studio album, Not All Heroes Wear Capes. The album was a huge success and went straight to number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It featured many famous artists like Drake, Travis Scott, and 21 Savage.

In 2019, he worked with The Weeknd to produce the number-one hit song "Heartless". In 2020, he and 21 Savage released Savage Mode II, a sequel to their first project. It also debuted at number one, giving both artists their second number-one album.

On December 2, 2022, Metro released his second solo album, Heroes & Villains. It was another number-one album and featured stars like John Legend, Future, and The Weeknd. Many fans and critics called it his best work yet.

In 2023, Metro took on a new challenge: creating the soundtrack for the movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He was the executive producer for the soundtrack and worked on most of the songs. The album featured artists like A$AP Rocky, Lil Wayne, and 21 Savage. Metro even had a small voice role in the movie as a Spider-Man version of himself.

2024–2025: Chart-Topping Albums

In 2024, Metro Boomin and Future released two collaborative albums. The first was We Don't Trust You, which came out in March. It went to number one and had the biggest opening week of any album in 2024 at the time. The song "Like That" with Kendrick Lamar also went to number one. It was Metro's first time having a number-one song as a lead artist.

Just a few weeks later, they released a second album, We Still Don't Trust You. It also debuted at number one. During a musical disagreement between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, Metro released an instrumental track called "BBL Drizzy". The beat quickly went viral online.

In 2025, Metro released his mixtape A FUTURISTIC SUMMA on July 22nd.

Musical Style

Metro Boomin is known for making trap music, a style of hip-hop. His beats often have a special sound. They usually include heavy bass, quick drum machine sounds, and dark, movie-like melodies.

While he mostly makes hip-hop, he has also worked with pop artists. For example, he produced several songs for The Weeknd's album After Hours.

What Are Producer Tags?

Many hip-hop producers use a "tag," which is a short sound or phrase at the start of a song. It's like a signature that lets listeners know who made the beat. Metro Boomin is famous for his tags.

  • "Metro Boomin want some more,..." This tag features the voice of rapper Young Thug. It became very popular in 2016.
  • "If Young Metro don't trust you I'm gon' shoot you" This is his most famous tag. It is spoken by Future and was used in the hit songs "Jumpman" and "Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1".
  • "Young Metro, young Metro, young Metro" This is another tag spoken by Future.
  • "Metro!" This simple tag is spoken by Young Thug. It was used a lot on the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack.

Personal Life

In June 2022, Metro Boomin's mother, Leslie Joanne Wayne, passed away. To honor her, he started the "Single Moms Are Superheroes" program with the Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation. The program helps single mothers in the Metro Atlanta area with money and other support.

In December 2023, Metro received a key to the city from the mayor of his hometown, St. Louis.

In August 2024, he started a grant program named after his mother. During his tour with Future, the program gave $20,000 and concert tickets to groups that help single mothers in each city they visited.
