Reminisce Kioni Mackie (born May 30, 1980), known as Remy Ma, is an American rapper. She became famous as a member of Fat Joe's group, Terror Squad. The famous rapper Big Pun helped her start her career.
Remy Ma's first solo album, There's Something About Remy: Based on a True Story (2006), was very popular. Some of her most successful songs include "Whuteva", "Lean Back" (with Terror Squad), "Conceited", and "All the Way Up" (with Fat Joe).
She has won the BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist twice, in 2005 and 2017. Remy Ma has also won two Vibe Awards and two Source Awards. She has been nominated for four Grammy Awards. From 2015 to 2020, she was on the VH1 reality show Love & Hip Hop: New York with her husband, Papoose.
Life and Career
Early Life and Music Start
Remy Ma was born in The Bronx, a part of New York City. She grew up in the Castle Hill Projects. From a young age, she helped take care of her younger brothers and sisters. She found comfort and a way to express herself by writing poetry.
Her talent for writing and rapping became well-known in the Bronx. This caught the attention of the famous rapper Big Pun. After they met and she showed her freestyle rap skills, Big Pun became her mentor. Remy Ma started her music career using the name "Remy Martin." She was featured on Big Pun's album Yeeeah Baby on the songs "Ms. Martin" and "You Was Wrong."
Joining Terror Squad and First Album
After Big Pun passed away, rapper Fat Joe signed Remy Ma to his music label. She became a member of his hip hop group Terror Squad. She appeared on their second album, True Story, which came out in 2004.
Their song, "Lean Back", was a huge hit! It was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks. This song also earned Remy Ma her first Grammy nomination.
On February 7, 2006, Remy Ma released her first solo album, There's Something About Remy: Based on a True Story. Popular songs from the album included "Whuteva" and "Conceited". The album was praised by music critics.
Mixtapes and Return to Music
After her first album, Remy Ma continued to work on new music. She released several mixtapes, which are collections of songs often shared for free. These mixtapes included The BX Files, Shesus Khryst, and Blasremy.
In 2011, Remy Ma's music was featured in a documentary called Black Lifestyle in Japan. In the documentary, she was praised for her unique style. She was also listed as one of the most popular hip-hop artists in Japan among young women.
Remy Ma returned to making music in 2014. On October 31, 2014, she released the mixtape I'm Around. In 2015, she released Remy on the Rocks, which was a collection of songs from her earlier mixtapes.
Reality TV and Plata O Plomo
On July 7, 2015, Remy Ma announced she was joining the TV show Love & Hip Hop: New York. She appeared on the show with her husband, Papoose. She was a regular cast member for many seasons. She also starred in spin-off shows like Remy & Papoose: Meet the Mackies.
In 2016, Fat Joe and Remy Ma announced they would release a joint album. The album was called Plata O Plomo, which means "money or bullets" in Spanish. The first song from the album, "All the Way Up", was released on the same day. This song was a huge success! It earned a platinum award and two Grammy Award nominations.
Plata O Plomo was generally liked by music critics. XXL magazine gave the album a good review, saying it was a "triumphant return" for the duo. On August 20, 2017, Remy Ma opened her own women's clothing store called Conceited in Raleigh, North Carolina.
New Music and Hosting
On November 16, 2017, Remy Ma released "Wake Me Up". This was the first song from her upcoming album, which was first called 7 Winters, 6 Summers. Later, on January 19, 2018, she released "Melanin Magic". This song featured vocals from Chris Brown.
On April 26, 2018, Remy Ma released the song "Company" with fellow Bronx artist A Boogie wit da Hoodie. She also released "New Thang" with rapper French Montana for the movie Uncle Drew.
From 2018 to 2020, Remy Ma was a host on the talk show State of the Culture with Joe Budden. In March 2020, she announced that her new album's title was changed to Reminisce. In 2021, Remy Ma also acted in the film 6:45, playing a character named Cassi.
Chrome 23 Battle League
In February 2022, Remy Ma started her own battle rap league called Chrome 23. She created it to help women get more chances and recognition in the world of battle rap, which is mostly dominated by men.
The league's first event was called "Queens Get The Money." It was streamed for free on the Hot97 YouTube channel. Later, the battles were uploaded to the Chrome 23 YouTube channel. The main battle featured Ms. Hustle and Couture, who are both well-known battle rappers.
Later that year, Remy Ma held more events. She even hosted the first-ever all-women battle rap tournament, simply called "The Tournament." Battle rapper C3 won the tournament and a prize of $25,000!
In February 2023, Chrome 23 celebrated its first anniversary with a co-ed event. The main battle, between Hitman Holla and Eazy the Block Captain, was very popular. It got a million views in just four days and became the most-watched battle of 2023 on YouTube. The league continued its success with another event in September 2023.
Personal Life
Remy Ma is married to Shamele Mackie, who is also a rapper known as Papoose. They got married in February 2016.
Remy Ma has one child from a previous relationship. She also has three stepchildren with Papoose. On December 14, 2018, she gave birth to her and Papoose's first child together, a daughter named Reminisce Mackenzie.
