Early Life and Music Start
Artist Julius Dubose was born in the Highbridge area of the Bronx, New York City, on December 6, 1995. He grew up there and started rapping when he was twelve years old. He was inspired by artists like Kanye West and 50 Cent.
When he was in Dewitt Clinton High School, he would practice rapping during lunch. He would perform rhymes he had written in a notebook. He told XXL magazine that he was a quiet student, but everyone knew him.
Later, his parents wanted him to focus more on his studies. He moved to Fort Pierce, Florida, and attended Fort Pierce Central. While there, he spent a lot of time working on his music. He even built a small studio in his apartment. After finishing high school, he kept focusing on music while working different jobs, like construction and pizza delivery.
Music Career Journey
2015–2016: Starting Out in Music
A Boogie began his music career by releasing a song called "Temporary" on SoundCloud when he was nineteen. He met Myster Whyte in Florida, who produced the song. Myster Whyte showed him a professional studio and suggested he work with a trainer to improve his skills. A Boogie said he used to record songs by playing a beat on one phone and recording himself rapping on another. He felt it was "magic" when he started practicing more.
In 2015, Dubose moved back to New York to make music his full-time job. He, along with Don Q, Quincy "QP" Acheampong, and Bubba, created their own record label called Highbridge the Label. They also set up a home studio.
In February 2016, A Boogie released his first big project, a mixtape called Artist. This mixtape helped launch his career and was even featured on Forbes magazine's list of rising rappers. He made the mixtape during a tough breakup, which influenced his music style.
Later, in May 2016, he released another project with Don Q called Highbridge the Label: The Takeover Vol.1. A Boogie also got to perform as an opening act for Drake and Future on their Summer Sixteen Tour. Drake also showed his support for A Boogie's music.
In July 2016, A Boogie signed a deal with Atlantic Records. In September 2016, he performed in a rap cypher at the 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards with other artists. In October 2016, he released his first extended play (EP), called TBA. This EP reached number 63 on the US Billboard 200 chart and was named one of Rolling Stone magazine's best rap albums of 2016.
2017–2018: Big Albums and Success
On June 13, 2017, XXL magazine chose Dubose as one of their "2017 Freshman Class" artists, highlighting him as a new talent. On September 29, 2017, he released his first studio album, The Bigger Artist. It featured other popular artists like Chris Brown, Kodak Black, and 21 Savage. The main song from the album, "Drowning" with Kodak Black, reached number 38 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
In January 2018, Dubose was featured on the song "Keke" by 6ix9ine, which reached number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100. He also appeared on another song called "Waka" on 6ix9ine's album Dummy Boy in November 2018.
His second album, Hoodie SZN, came out on December 21, 2018. It included songs with artists like 6ix9ine, Juice Wrld, and Offset. The album started at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and quickly moved to number one in January 2019. It became one of the most played albums of 2019 and was listed among the top albums of the decade by Billboard.
2019–2020: Artist 2.0 Release
In 2019, Dubose was featured on over 20 songs with many artists, including Ed Sheeran, Khalid, and Lil Durk. He also performed in concerts and tours across the US and UK.
On September 13, 2019, he released "Mood Swings", the first song from his album Artist 2.0. It reached number 76 on the Billboard Hot 100. On November 15, 2019, he released "Reply" featuring Lil Uzi Vert, which debuted at number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100. The third song from the album, "King of My City", came out on January 31, 2020, and peaked at number 69.
Artist 2.0 was released on February 14, 2020, which was Valentine's Day. He chose this date because his first Artist mixtape was released on Valentine's Day in 2016, and it was also his daughter's third birthday.
The album reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart. It featured artists like Roddy Ricch, Gunna, DaBaby, and Summer Walker. Dubose was supposed to perform at Wireless 2020, but the event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On June 16, 2020, Dubose released "Bleed", a song from the deluxe version of Artist 2.0, which came out on June 19, 2020. It reached number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100.
2021–2022: Break and New Album
After releasing the deluxe edition of Artist 2.0, Dubose took a break from releasing his own songs for about a year. During this time, he was featured on songs by artists like Pop Smoke, Nas, and DJ Khaled.
On May 14, 2021, Dubose returned with a song called "9 Bridge" with rapper Rowdy Rebel. A week later, on May 21, 2021, he released "24 Hours" featuring Lil Durk. This song reached number 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has since been certified platinum.
In July 2021, while he was working on his fourth album, about 20 songs from the album were leaked online. This caused the album to be delayed until late 2022. Dubose said that if songs keep leaking, he would take longer to release new music because he works hard on his songs.
On December 7, 2021, after his 26th birthday, Dubose announced a new EP called B4 A Boogie vs. Artist (or B4 AVA). This EP was a preview for his upcoming album, which was then called A Boogie vs. Artist. The EP was released on December 10, 2021, and included "24 Hours". One song from the EP, "Man in the Mirror," was released as a single in February 2022 and reached number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 2022, Dubose also got a voice acting role as Francis "KG" Leibowitz-Jenkins in the Disney+ animated series, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.
On February 11 and March 4, 2022, Dubose released two warm-up songs, "Non Judgemental" and "Hit Different" featuring B-Lovee, before his album Me vs. Myself came out. He also appeared on King Von's album What It Means to Be King on the song "My Fault".
Dubose released a song called "Playa" on April 1, 2022, featuring American singer H.E.R. and his girlfriend Ella Rodriguez.
On September 5, 2022, Dubose announced that his fourth studio album, Me vs. Myself, would be released on November 4, 2022.
A song from the album, "B.R.O (Better Ride Out)", featuring Roddy Ricch, was released on October 7, 2022. Two weeks later, on October 21, 2022, Dubose released "Take Shots" featuring Tory Lanez. He revealed the album's song list on October 27, showing which songs were on the "Artist" side and which were on the "A Boogie" side.
Because Drake and 21 Savage's album was also set for November 4, 2022, Dubose decided to delay his album to December 9, 2022, so they wouldn't release on the same day.
The last song from the album, "Ballin", was first released in the video game NBA 2K23 on November 1, 2022, and then on all music platforms on November 4, 2022.
Me vs. Myself was released on December 9, 2022, with features from Lil Durk, Kodak Black, and H.E.R. It reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 200. A deluxe version of the album was released three days later with an extra song called "Needed That" featuring PnB Rock.
2023–Present: Tours and New Projects
Dubose announced his Me vs Myself Tour at the end of 2022, which began in February 2023. Tickets sold out very quickly. He performed in North America and Europe, including famous venues like Barclays Center and Alexandra Palace. He also went on a Canadian tour in June due to high demand and performed at big festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza.
Dubose shared that he planned to release several albums in 2023, including a collaborative album with other artists.
On February 14, 2023, he released his yearly Valentine's Day song called "No 808's" featuring Vory. A week later, he released a remix of his 2020 song "Secrets" with Mariah the Scientist, because the song became popular on TikTok.
On April 21, Dubose collaborated with Dutch DJ Tiësto on "Chills (LA Hills)" for Tiësto's album Drive. The song reached number 11 on the Billboard US Dance/Electronic Chart.
On May 31, Dubose was featured on the soundtrack for the movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He was on the main song "Calling" with Swae Lee and Nav, produced by Metro Boomin. This song reached number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 and charted in many countries. It is one of the most streamed rap songs of 2023. They also performed the song at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.
On June 21, Dubose announced at a show in Canada that his fifth studio album would be called Better Off Alone. The album was first planned for 2023 but was later confirmed for mid-2024.
On August 14, 2023, at the Hip-Hop 50 Live concert, Dubose announced a new EP called B4 BOA (Before Better Off Alone), which would be a preview for his fifth album. The three-song EP, released on September 8, 2023, included "Her Birthday", "Booby Trap", and "Did Me Wrong".
Dubose released a song from Better Off Alone called "Steppas" on March 29, 2024. On April 22, 2024, he released an EP titled Alone, which had four songs: "Tiffanys", "No More Questions", "How to Love", and "D.T.N."
