What is Indie Rock Music?
People sometimes use "indie rock" and "alternative rock" to mean the same thing. But there are some small differences. At first, "indie" was used more for British music. "Alternative" was used more for American music.
In 1986, a British magazine called NME released a music tape. It was called C86. This tape helped define the sound of early indie music. It often featured guitars that made a bright, ringing sound. It also used old-fashioned sounds from 1960s rock bands. The music often sounded like it was made by people doing it themselves, without fancy studios.
Indie Rock Around the World
The meaning of "indie" can be a bit different depending on where you are. In the UK, "indie" can describe sadder, ballad-like music. This music might not sound like typical rock.
In North America, "indie" often means music that sounds like older styles. It might also sound "twee," which means cute or sweet. It can also sound like British music.
Popular Indie Rock Artists
Today, indie rock has become quite popular. Many indie rock bands and artists have found success. Some well-known indie rock acts include R.E.M., Pavement, Regina Spektor, and Superchunk.
New Indie Music Styles
Indie rock has also mixed with other types of music. This has created many new genres.
Indietronica
Indietronica, or indie electronic music, mixes indie rock with pop and electronic music. This style often uses synthesizers and drum machines.
Indie Dance
Alternative dance music, or indie dance, is another mix. It combines electronic dance music, alternative rock, indie rock, and New Wave. This music often takes rock sounds and uses them in songs you can dance to.
