Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Anthony Jermaine White was born on December 17, 1984. He grew up in Kansas City and Leavenworth, Kansas. Music was a big part of his family. His father, mother, grandmother, and uncle were all church singers or played instruments.
When he was 15, J. White realized he wasn't going to be a football star. He decided to focus on music instead. He started making beats when he was 16 years old. At 17, his uncle gave him his first keyboard. He thought he would become rich quickly, but it took a lot of hard work. He graduated from Leavenworth High School.
Music Career Journey
In 2005, White moved to New York City to learn how to produce music. There, he met Klenord "Shaft" Raphael, who became his teacher and manager. Shaft taught him how to use parts of old songs to make new ones, a process called sampling.
That summer, J. White moved back to Kansas City. For the next ten years, he worked as a janitor, a DJ, and a producer. He worked in cities like Kansas City, Dallas, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. During this time, he made beats for artists like Stevie Stone, Krizz Kaliko, Eric Bellinger, and Lyrica Anderson. However, his music career was not taking off as he hoped. He often didn't get credit for the songs he produced.
Breakthrough with Cardi B
In 2016, his manager Shaft invited him back to New York to make some beats. There, he met Cardi B, a rapper from the Bronx who was also Shaft's client. J. White said he believed in Cardi B's vision. They became a team and worked towards success together.
Their first song was "What a Girl Likes" in 2016. Then, he produced several songs for Cardi B's second mixtape, Gangsta ... Music, Vol. 2 (2017). This included the song "Lick," which featured Offset.
Chart-Topping Hits
In 2017, J. White produced Cardi B's first major hit song, "Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)". This song became number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks. It was the first song he produced to reach this top spot. "Bodak Yellow" also won awards, including Single of the Year at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards. In September 2017, he signed a deal with Kobalt Music Group, a company that helps manage music rights.
In 2018, he produced "I Like It" for Cardi B, Bad Bunny, and J Balvin. This song also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It was his second number-one hit. Billboard magazine and Apple Music called it one of the best songs of the year. It was nominated for Record of the Year at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.
J. White also helped produce Iggy Azalea's album In My Defense (2019). This album included the song "Sally Walker". He also produced "Started" and "Freak of the Weak" on that album.

His Creative Process
J. White says he lets his music ideas come to him naturally. He doesn't have strict rules for making music. He believes that hip hop songs should be created quickly. If the energy is right, it will happen fast. He famously created the beat for Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow" in just 15 minutes.
His full name, "J. White Did It," helps people know he produced the song. He added "Did It" because his last name, White, is common. His special sound tag, "J. White, I need a beat, I can go off on (Ooh)," plays at the start of his songs.
