Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Anthony Jermaine White was born on December 17, 1984. He grew up in Kansas City and Leavenworth, Kansas. Music was a big part of his family. His father, mother, grandmother, and uncle were all church singers or played instruments.
When he was 15, J. White realized he wasn't going to be a football star. He decided to focus on music instead. He started making beats when he was 16 years old. At 17, his uncle gave him his first keyboard. He thought he would become rich quickly, but it took a lot of hard work. He graduated from Leavenworth High School.
Journey to Music Success
In 2005, J. White moved to New York City to learn how to produce music. There, he met Klenord "Shaft" Raphael, who became his teacher and manager. Shaft taught him how to use parts of old songs to create new ones, a process called sampling.
That summer, J. White moved back to Kansas City. For the next ten years, he worked many jobs. He was a janitor, a DJ, and a producer. He made beats for artists like Stevie Stone and Krizz Kaliko. However, his music career was not taking off as he hoped. He often didn't get credit for the songs he produced.
Meeting Cardi B and First Big Hits
In 2016, his manager Shaft invited him back to New York. There, he met Cardi B, a rapper from the Bronx. J. White started working with her and believed in her talent. He said they became "one big happy family."
Their first song together was "What a Girl Likes" in 2016. Then, he produced several songs for Cardi B's mixtape, Gangsta ... Music, Vol. 2 (2017). This included the song "Lick."
In 2017, J. White produced Cardi B's first major hit, "Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)". This song became number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks. It was his first song to reach the top spot. "Bodak Yellow" also won awards, like Single of the Year at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards. In September 2017, he signed a deal with Kobalt Music Group, a music publishing company.
More Number Ones and Grammy Wins
In 2018, he produced "I Like It" for Cardi B, Bad Bunny, and J Balvin. This song also hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It was his second number one hit. Many music experts called it one of the best songs of the year. It was even nominated for Record of the Year.
J. White also helped produce Iggy Azalea's album In My Defense (2019). He produced songs like "Sally Walker" and "Started" for her.
He is managed by Lucas Keller, Nic Warner, and Chad Wes at Milk & Honey. His music is published by Sony Music Publishing.

Personal Challenges and Inspiration
J. White faced very tough times in his life. In 2015, he went through a very difficult period. He felt like everything was falling apart. He struggled with personal issues and financial problems. He even thought about giving up on music and his dreams.
However, he found the strength to keep going. These challenges made him even more determined to succeed. His hard work and perseverance eventually led to his big break in the music industry.
His Unique Music Style
J. White believes that making hip hop music should feel natural and quick. He says he lets his "spirit guide" him when he creates beats. He doesn't follow strict rules. If he feels like playing piano or lighting candles, he does it.
He thinks that if the energy is right, a great song can be made quickly. For example, he created the beat for Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow" in just 15 minutes!
His producer name, "J. White Did It," helps everyone know he made the beat. He chose this name because "J. White" is a common name. Adding "Did It" makes it clear that he is the one responsible for the amazing sound. You can often hear his special tag at the beginning of his songs: "J. White, I need a beat, I can go off on (Ooh)."
