Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon (born August 14, 1998), known professionally as Doechii, is an American rapper and songwriter. She first became famous on TikTok, which led her to sign with Top Dawg Entertainment and Capitol Records in 2022.
Her 2023 song "What It Is (Block Boy)" (featuring Kodak Black) was a big hit. It was her first song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This song also earned a platinum award from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Doechii's third mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal (2024), was highly praised by music critics. It won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. This made her the third woman ever to win in that category. Two more songs from the mixtape, "Nissan Altima" and "Denial Is a River", also made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Doechii has also been a guest on songs by other artists. These include "Anxiety" by Sleepy Hallow and "Balloon" by Tyler, the Creator. She also appeared on "ExtraL" by Jennie. Early Life and Beginnings
Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon was born on August 14, 1998, in Tampa, Florida. She grew up in Tampa. Her father and uncle were both rappers, and her father even recorded music professionally. Doechii has younger twin sisters. She has said that she grew up in a Christian home.
Doechii attended Howard W. Blake High School. As a child, she enjoyed many activities. She performed ballet and tap dancing. She also acted, was a cheerleader, did gymnastics, and played soccer. She originally planned to become a professional choral singer. However, a friend encouraged her to create and share her own music online.
Music Career
Doechii started writing poetry and rap when she was in high school. By 2014, she was already making music. She released her first song, "Girls," on SoundCloud in 2016. She used the name "Iamdoechii" at the time.
Her first project, Coven Music Session, Vol. 1, came out in 2019. In 2020, she released her first EP (Extended Play), Oh the Places You'll Go. She paid for this project herself. The magazine Rolling Stone described it as a mix of pop, dance, and hip hop.
A song from that EP, "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake," was released in September 2020. It became very popular on TikTok in 2021. This helped her get noticed by many record labels. In 2021, she released her second EP, Bra-Less. She was also featured on Isaiah Rashad's song "Wat U Sed." She performed this song with him at the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards. Doechii also opened for SZA's tour in 2021.
In March 2022, Doechii signed with Capitol Records and Top Dawg Entertainment. She was the first female rapper to sign with Top Dawg Entertainment. That same month, she released "Persuasive," her first song with Top Dawg. She also appeared on the song "Trampoline" by David Guetta and Afrojack.
In April 2022, she released the song "Crazy" along with a music video. Her second EP, She / Her / Black ..., was released on August 5, 2022. This was her first major release with a record label. Her performance of "Persuasive" in July 2022 was nominated for an award at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards.
Doechii performed at the 22nd Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2023. Also in 2023, she made her acting debut in Earth Mama. This was a drama film directed by Savanah Leaf.
In August 2024, Doechii released her third mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal. It received great reviews. Pitchfork called it "her most ambitious and musically diverse release." They said it was "playful and melodic" but still had "hard-hitting hip-hop." The mixtape won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. This made her the third woman to win this award. After the awards show, she released the song "Nosebleeds" to celebrate her win.
Throughout 2024, Doechii was featured on several songs. These included Katy Perry's "I'm His, He's Mine" and Tyler, the Creator's "Balloon." She also appeared on "I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend" by Banks. In January 2025, Doechii was a guest judge on an episode of RuPaul's Drag Race season 17. Her song "Alter Ego" was used in a lip-sync competition on the show. This made the song much more popular on music streaming sites. In February 2025, Doechii was featured on Jennie's song, "ExtraL."
Achievements and Awards
Doechii was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards. She won Best Rap Album at the same event. She also received several nominations for the 2025 NAACP Image Awards. These included Outstanding New Artist and Outstanding Female Artist. Variety magazine named her the 2024 Hitmakers Hip-Hop Disruptor of the Year.
Musical Style
Mankaprr Conteh from Rolling Stone described Doechii's rap style as "animated." She said her songs tell "quirky" stories. Music critics have compared her music to artists like Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, Missy Elliott, and Azealia Banks.
Doechii describes her own music as alternative hip hop. She has said that Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, Tyler, The Creator, Kendrick Lamar, and SZA are her biggest musical inspirations. She also admires artists like Trick Daddy, Grace Jones, Paramore, Madonna, KRS-One, and MF Doom.
Personal Life
Doechii currently lives in Los Angeles. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, she lived in New York City. During that time, she posted YouTube vlogs about her daily life.
