Megan Jovon Ruth Pete (born February 15, 1995), known as Megan Thee Stallion, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. She grew up in Houston, Texas. She first became famous when videos of her freestyling (making up raps on the spot) went viral on social media like Instagram. She signed with 1501 Certified Entertainment in 2018.
Megan Thee Stallion had two number-one songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2020. These were "Savage Remix" (with Beyoncé) and her part on Cardi B's song "WAP". "Savage Remix" won two Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. "WAP" was her first number-one song in many countries. It was also the first song to top the Billboard Global 200 chart.
Her first studio album, Good News (2020), was very popular and successful. It reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album included the song "Body". This made her the first female artist to have three number-one songs on the Streaming Songs chart in one year. Her 2022 song "Sweetest Pie" (with Dua Lipa) was also a big hit. It came out before her second album, Traumazine (2022), which reached number four on the Billboard 200. In 2024, her song "Hiss" from her third album Megan (2024) became her first solo song to top the Billboard Hot 100. It also made her the first solo female rapper to debut at number one on the Billboard Global 200 chart.
Megan has won many awards. These include six BET Awards, five BET Hip Hop Awards, four American Music Awards, and four MTV Video Music Awards. She also won a Billboard Women in Music Award and three Grammy Awards. At the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, she became the second female rapper to win Best New Artist. Lauryn Hill was the first in 1999. Early Life and School
Megan Jovon Ruth Pete was born on February 15, 1995, in San Antonio, Texas. Her mother, Holly Thomas, moved them to Houston right after Megan was born. Holly Thomas was a rapper known as "Holly-Wood." She would take Megan to recording sessions instead of daycare.
Megan grew up in the South Park area of Houston. When she was 14, she moved with her mother to Pearland. She started writing raps at age 14. When she showed her mother her rapping skills at 18, her mother told her to wait until she was 21 to make it a career. Megan went to Pearland High School and finished in 2013. Her father passed away during her first year of high school.
In 2013, while Megan was a student at Prairie View A&M University, she started putting videos of herself freestyling online. A video of her rapping against male opponents in a "cypher" (a group rap session) became very popular. This helped Megan get more followers on social media. She gained fans by posting her freestyles on Instagram while in college. She says her very active fans helped her early success. After taking some time off from school, Megan went back to her studies at Texas Southern University. She graduated on December 11, 2021, with a degree in health administration.
She chose the stage name "Megan Thee Stallion" because people called her a "stallion" when she was younger. This was because of her height (about 5 feet 10 inches) and strong build.

She has also been influenced by Beyoncé. In her Grammy Awards speech with Beyoncé for "Savage," she said: "Ever since I was little, I was like, 'you know what? One day, I'm gonna grow up and I'm gonna be like the rap Beyoncé.' That was definitely my goal. [..] I love her work ethic, I love the way she is, I love the way she carries herself." In a Teen Vogue interview, she spoke about Nicki Minaj as another influence: "[she] was here before us, so this is who we had to look at, at this time. So, definitely she has been an inspiration to me."

Her Music Journey Ends with a Win
In 2020, Megan Thee Stallion had some disagreements with her record label, 1501 Certified Entertainment. Her management company, Roc Nation, thought her contract was unfair. When Megan released an album in 2021, the record label said it wasn't a full album. They said it had 29 minutes of new music instead of 45 minutes. This meant she would have to release more albums to fulfill her contract. On February 18, 2022, Megan took legal action against the label. She argued that her album met the definition of an album with at least 45 minutes of material.
On August 12, 2022, the rapper released her second studio album, Traumazine. When she announced it, she spoke about the ongoing legal issues. She shared her frustration and sadness about how hard it was to release her music. But she ended her message to fans by saying, "we almost out." The week after the album came out, the rapper filed a new complaint. She wanted her work under the contract to be recognized. She also asked for money for damages.
On October 19, 2023, lawyers for 1501 Certified Entertainment announced that Megan Thee Stallion and the label had reached a private agreement. They said they were happy to have solved their legal differences. As part of the agreement, both sides decided to go their separate ways in a friendly manner.
