Early Life and Music Dreams

Dua Lipa was born in London. Her parents, Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa, are from Kosovo. Her family is Muslim, and she also has Bosnian roots through her grandmother. Her grandfathers were both historians. Dua has a younger sister named Rina and a brother named Gjin.

Her father, Dukagjin, was a singer and guitarist in a rock band from Kosovo called Oda. He played music at home, including his own songs and music from artists like David Bowie and Radiohead. Dua started singing when she was five years old.

She grew up in West Hampstead, London. She went to Fitzjohn's Primary School, where she learned to play the cello. When she tried out for the school choir, the teacher told her she "could not sing." At age nine, she started weekend singing lessons at the Sylvia Young Theatre School.

In 2008, when Kosovo became independent, Dua Lipa moved with her family to Pristina. There, she learned more about the Albanian language and started thinking seriously about a music career.

When she was 15, Dua Lipa moved back to London. She went to Parliament Hill School and also studied part-time at Sylvia Young Theatre School again. She began uploading her own songs and covers of popular songs to SoundCloud and YouTube. She covered songs by artists like Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera.

Dua Lipa also did some modeling for brands like Topshop. In 2013, she got a small role as a singer in an advertisement for The X Factor. This helped her find a producer and a manager.
