Early Life and First Steps in Entertainment

Destiny Hope Cyrus was born on November 23, 1992, in Franklin, Tennessee. Her parents are Leticia "Tish" Jean Cyrus and country singer Billy Ray Cyrus. She had a heart condition when she was born. Her parents called her "Smiley" because she smiled a lot as a baby. This nickname was later shortened to "Miley." In 2008, she officially changed her name to Miley Ray Cyrus. Her middle name honors her grandfather, Ronald Ray Cyrus. Singer-songwriter Dolly Parton is Miley's godmother.

Miley's parents married in 1993. They had two more children, Braison and Noah. Miley's mother also had two older children, Brandi and Trace, from a previous relationship. All of Miley's siblings are involved in entertainment.

Miley went to Heritage Elementary School in Tennessee. When she got the role in Hannah Montana, her family moved to Los Angeles. She then studied with a private tutor. Miley was raised as a Christian and was baptized in a Southern Baptist church. In 2001, when Miley was eight, her family moved to Toronto, Canada, for her father's TV show Doc. After seeing a musical called Mamma Mia!, Miley told her father she wanted to be an actress. She started taking singing and acting lessons.

Miley's first acting role was in her father's TV series Doc. In 2003, she was in Tim Burton's movie Big Fish. She auditioned for Hannah Montana when she was thirteen.
