Early Life and Beginnings
Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. was born on October 20, 1971, in Long Beach, California. His parents nicknamed him "Snoopy" because he loved the cartoon character from Peanuts. He was the second of his mother's three sons.
When he was very young, Broadus started singing and playing piano at church. In sixth grade, he began rapping. As a child, he helped his family by selling candy and delivering newspapers. He was a dedicated student and active in choir and football. Broadus said he started getting into trouble and joining groups in his teenage years.
Broadus often rapped at school. He remembered: "When I rapped in the hallways at school I would draw such a big crowd that the principal would think there was a fight going on. It made me begin to realize that I had a gift."
After high school, he made homemade tapes with his cousins Nate Dogg and Lil' ½ Dead, and friend Warren G. They called their group 213. One of Snoop's early raps ended up with Dr. Dre, who was very impressed and called Snoop to audition.
Music Career Highlights
Starting with Death Row Records (1992–1998)
When he started recording, Broadus used the name Snoop Doggy Dogg. Dr. Dre worked with him on the film Deep Cover and then on Dre's album The Chronic. This helped Snoop Dogg's first album, Doggystyle, become a huge success.
The album's songs "Who Am I (What's My Name)?" and "Gin and Juice" became top ten hits in the U.S. Doggystyle stayed on the music charts for many months. Snoop Dogg's vocal style was unique because he spoke softly, unlike many other rappers who would shout.
In 1995, Snoop Dogg started his own record label called Doggy Style Records, Inc. He worked with rapper Tupac Shakur on the song "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted" in 1996.
In 1996, Snoop Dogg released his second album, Tha Doggfather. This album had a different style from Doggystyle. It sold well but was not as successful as his first album. After Dr. Dre left Death Row Records, Snoop Dogg decided not to make more music for the label until his contract ended.
New Labels and Continued Success (1998–2006)
In 1998, Snoop Dogg signed with Master P's No Limit Records. He released albums like Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998), No Limit Top Dogg (1999), and Tha Last Meal (2000).
In 2002, he released Paid tha Cost to Be da Boss, which included popular songs like "From tha Chuuuch to da Palace" and "Beautiful". By this time, Snoop Dogg had moved away from his earlier "gangster" image.
