James Clay Jones III (born August 9, 1982), known by his stage name Boldy James, is an American rapper from Detroit, Michigan. He is a member of the hip-hop group Griselda.
Boldy James is known for his deep voice and calm, relaxed style of rapping. In his songs, he often tells detailed stories about life in his city. He has released many albums, mixtapes, and EPs since his start in 2009.
He gained more fame in 2020 with his album The Price of Tea in China. It was made with the producer The Alchemist, who also produced his first album. That same year, he released Manger on McNichols, an album that mixed rap with jazz music. He often works with other artists from Griselda and many different producers.

Early Life and Name
James Clay Jones III was born in Atlanta, Georgia. His father, James Clay Jones Jr., was a police officer, and his mother is Toni K. Broadus. In 1983, the family moved back to their hometown of Detroit, Michigan.
His parents separated in 1989. Jones went to live with his father on the west side of Detroit. He discovered his love for music at age 12 after performing in a middle school talent show. Soon after, he started writing his first raps. He attended Detroit Cooley High School but left after the ninth grade to focus on his life experiences.
He got his stage name, "Boldy James," from a childhood friend named James Osely III, who was called "Boldy." After his friend passed away, Jones decided to use the name to honor his memory as he began his rap career.
Music Career
Boldy James first got national attention in 2009. He was featured on two songs on the mixtape Merry Christmas by The Cool Kids and Don Cannon. In 2011, he released his first solo mixtape, Trappers Alley Pros and Cons. The music website Pitchfork called it one of the most overlooked projects of the year.
He continued to release music, including the mixtape Consignment (2012) and the EP Grand Quarters (2013). His first official album, My 1st Chemistry Set, came out in 2013. It was produced entirely by The Alchemist.
In 2014, Boldy James signed with Mass Appeal Records, a record label started by the famous rapper Nas. In 2020, he joined Westside Gunn's label, Griselda Records. With Griselda, he has released popular albums like The Price of Tea in China and Bo Jackson.
Personal Life
On January 9, 2023, Boldy James was in a serious car accident in Detroit. He suffered broken bones in his back and needed surgery, but he has since recovered.
He has famous relatives in the music world. He is a cousin of rapper and producer Chuck Inglish from The Cool Kids. He is also related to the world-famous rapper Snoop Dogg.
Jones has six children.
