About Chuck Inglish
Early Life and The Cool Kids
Chuck Inglish, whose real name is Evan Ingersoll, grew up in Mount Clemens, Michigan. After he turned 18, he moved to Chicago, Illinois. Evan went to Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods, Michigan. There, he played both football and basketball.
In 2005, Evan met Sir Michael Rocks. Michael found a music beat that Evan had made on MySpace. They met to talk about selling the beat, but they ended up recording music together for two hours! They were inspired by older hip hop music and artists like LL Cool J and Eric B. & Rakim.
Evan started sharing their new music. Soon, Josh Young from Flosstradamus booked them for a DJ show. At this show, they met DJ Diplo. Diplo offered to release their unreleased songs as a mixtape called Totally Flossed Out. It was later released on C.A.K.E. Recordings.
Another DJ, A-Trak, also offered them a deal with his label, Fool's Gold Records. They signed with him for just one song. However, The Cool Kids felt they were not getting enough attention at Fool's Gold Records. Chuck once said that when your boss is touring with a big artist, it's easy for things to get delayed.
All their early music was shared only on their MySpace page. After performing at the CMJ Music Festival and Pitchfork Media Music Festival in July 2007, they got a recording contract. The Cool Kids eventually signed with Chocolate Industries, another independent music label.
In 2008, the group announced that their first album, When Fish Ride Bicycles, would come out that year. However, it was not released until 2011. Chuck Inglish has produced most of their songs, but both members rap and produce music. They use a music software program called Reason to create their beats.
In 2007, The Cool Kids opened for M.I.A. on her KALA Tour. They also performed at the 2008 Rock the Bells hip hop festival. The group toured Australia in February 2008 and played at the Laneway Festival. They also appeared at SUNY Purchase's Culture Shock event in April 2009.
One of their songs, "Black Mags", was featured in a Rhapsody TV commercial in late 2007. In the same year, the group worked with Lil Wayne and DJ Benzi on a song called "Gettin' It."
The Cool Kids' music has been featured in video games like NBA Live 08 and MLB 2K8 with their song "88". Their song "Awesome" with The Bloody Beetroots was in Need for Speed Nitro. The song "Mikey Rocks" was used in an episode of the HBO TV series Entourage.
Rolling Stone magazine listed them as one of the "Ten Artists to Watch in 2008." The magazine noted that The Cool Kids went from being a local sensation in Chicago to a very popular act at the CMJ festival. In 2008, they were the main performers for the "NBA 2K Bounce Tour" with Q-Tip.
The group's second official mixtape, Gone Fishing, was released on May 5, 2009. On May 12, 2010, they released another mixtape called Tacklebox. In 2010, Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks joined with Gary, Indiana's Freddie Gibbs and Cleveland's Chip tha Ripper. They formed a "super group" called P.O.C. (Pulled Over by the Cops).
On July 11, 2011, The Cool Kids' first album, When Fish Ride Bicycles, was finally released. Chuck Inglish also released instrumental mixtapes: WRKING on January 2, 2012, and WRKOUT on April 23, 2012.
Solo Music: Convertibles and More
On June 13, 2013, Chuck Inglish released a mixtape called Droptops. He then released a five-song EP titled Easily on October 15, 2013.
His first solo album, Convertibles, came out on April 8, 2014. It was released through his own label, Sounds Like Fun, and Dave Sitek's Federal Prism Records. Chuck Inglish co-produced the album with Incubus' Mike Einziger.
The Convertibles album has 13 songs and features many other artists. These include Chance the Rapper, Action Bronson, BJ the Chicago Kid, Ab-Soul, and Mac Miller. His fellow The Cool Kids member, Sir Michael Rocks, and the Canadian electro funk duo Chromeo also appear on the album.
Before the album, three songs were released as singles: "Swervin'" (featuring Sir Michael Rocks and Polyester the Saint), "Came Thru/Easily" (featuring Ab-Soul and Mac Miller), and "Legs" (featuring Chromeo).
Chuck Inglish has continued to release music. His album Everybody's Big Brother came out in 2015, and Ev Zeppelin was released in 2016.
