Charles Jawanzaa Worth (born October 20, 1986) is an American rapper from Cleveland, Ohio. He is known by his stage names Chip Tha Ripper and King Chip.

Chip is famous for his work with fellow Cleveland rapper Kid Cudi. He was a guest artist on Kid Cudi's 2013 hit single "Just What I Am". This song was very successful and was certified double platinum, meaning it sold over two million copies. Besides working with big names, Chip has also released many of his own musical projects called mixtapes.

Music Career

Getting Started (2006–2008)

Chip Tha Ripper started sharing his music online in 2006. His style was often described as slow-paced hip-hop. One of his early songs, "Catch The Beat," became very popular in his hometown of Cleveland.

In 2007, the famous singer Akon was featured on his song "Club Rockin." Even with this attention, Chip decided to stay an independent artist and didn't sign with a major record label.

During this time, he often traveled to Chicago. There, he worked with the group Kidz in the Hall on their album The In Crowd. He also appeared on producer Hi-Tek's album Hi-Teknology 3 and on Kid Cudi's first mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi in 2008. His friendship and work with Kid Cudi helped him become more well-known across the country.

The Famous "Interior Crocodile Alligator" Freestyle

In 2007, Chip performed a freestyle rap on a show called "Street Stars' Radio." A part of this rap became a huge internet sensation. The lines that everyone remembers are:

"Interior crocodile alligator / I drive a Chevrolet movie theater."

What did he mean? The lyrics were a clever way to describe his car. "Interior crocodile alligator" meant his Chevrolet had a fancy leather interior made from reptile skin. "I drive a Chevrolet movie theater" meant his car was big and had TV screens inside, like a movie theater.

Many younger fans didn't catch the meaning and thought the lines were just silly and random. This short clip from his freestyle became a popular meme online for many years.

Working with Friends (2009–2012)

In late 2009, Chip released a mixtape called The Cleveland Show, named after the popular cartoon. One of its most famous songs was "Fat Raps," which featured rappers Big Sean and Currensy.

On September 5, 2010, Chip and Kid Cudi announced they were forming a duo called "The Almighty GloryUS." They had already recorded a song together in 2009 called “GloryUs,” which inspired the group's name.

Chip was also featured on Kid Cudi's popular albums, Man on the Moon: The End of Day and Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager. In 2011, he formed a hip-hop supergroup called "P.O.C." with artists Freddie Gibbs and The Cool Kids. A supergroup is a band formed by musicians who are already famous from other groups or as solo artists.

Becoming King Chip (2012–2018)

On August 9, 2012, the rapper announced he was changing his stage name from "Chip tha Ripper" to "King Chip." He explained his decision on Twitter:

I am King Chip. Actually born in the ghetto slums of East Cleveland, Ohio. Rest in peace my mentor and former king, Hawk. His death made me....My birth name is Charles Jawanzaa Worth. Jawanzaa is Swahili and it means 'great leader and great warrior.' Look it up. I am King Chip.

As King Chip, he appeared on Kid Cudi's hit single "Just What I Am" from the album Indicud. In 2013, he released his own mixtape titled 44108, which is a zip code for an area in Cleveland. A deluxe version of this mixtape was released the next year.

Recent Years (2019–Present)

In 2019, King Chip began using his old stage name, Chip tha Ripper, again on new songs.

In early 2020, his "Interior Crocodile Alligator" freestyle from 2007 became popular again, this time as a TikTok trend. The video clip received over 70 million views. That same year, Chip worked with New Zealand rapper Lil Mussie on a charity project to help children in poverty.

In 2024, Chip was featured on Kid Cudi’s single “Don’t Worry,” which was part of the soundtrack for the movie Moon Man.
