Fredrick Jamel Tipton (born June 14, 1982), known as Freddie Gibbs, is an American rapper and songwriter. He started his music journey in 2004. Gibbs first signed with Interscope Records in 2006. However, his album was not released, and he left the label.

Later, in 2011, he joined Young Jeezy's CTE World label. Through CTE, he released several popular mixtapes. One of these was Baby Face Killa in 2012. After leaving CTE in 2013, Gibbs started his own record label called ESGN. He released his first studio album, ESGN, in June 2013.

Freddie Gibbs has released many albums throughout his career. His albums include Shadow of a Doubt (2015) and You Only Live 2wice (2017). In 2018, he released the mixtape Freddie. His fourth album, Soul Sold Separately (2022), was released by Warner Records. It reached number 11 on the Billboard 200 chart. His most recent solo album is You Only Die 1nce (2024).

He has also worked with other artists on five collaboration albums. He made two albums with Madlib: Piñata (2014) and Bandana (2019). Early Life and Beginnings

Fredrick Tipton was born and grew up in Gary, Indiana. He lived on the east side of the city. He played football at Ball State University with a scholarship. However, he was later asked to leave college.

When he was 19, he joined the U.S. Army. This was part of a program related to some legal issues he faced. But he was discharged from the Army after eight months.

After leaving the Army, he worked at a mall in Gary. There, he met a local hip-hop producer named Finger Roll. Finger Roll had the only music studio in Gary at the time. Gibbs joined Finger Roll's No Tamin Entertainment group. This is when he started his rap career.

On December 8, 2022, Freddie Gibbs shared something special. On the All The Smoke podcast, he said his father, Warren Tipton, joined the music group The Chi-Lites in 2018 as a singer.

Music Career Journey

Starting Out (2004–2011)

Freddie Gibbs began his rap career in 2004. He released his first full project, a mixtape called Full Metal Jackit. He released a second part of it in the same year. Around this time, he signed with Interscope Records. He started working on his first album. But he was dropped from the label in late 2006. This happened when the person who signed him left the company.

Gibbs then released his first extended play (EP) called Str8 Killa in August 2010.

He continued to release mixtapes on his own. In 2011, he signed with Young Jeezy's record label, CTE World. In February 2011, Gibbs announced a new supergroup. He joined with rappers King Chip and The Cool Kids. Their group was called Pulled Over by the Cops (P.O.C.).

In October, he released the mixtape Cold Day in Hell. This mixtape featured other artists like Young Jeezy and 2 Chainz. It received a lot of attention from music magazines. Gibbs also worked with hip-hop producer Madlib. They released two EPs, Thuggin' in September 2011 and Shame in June 2012. These EPs were a preview for their album Piñata.

After Cold Day in Hell, Gibbs announced his next mixtape. It was called Baby Face Killa. It came out on September 25, 2012. It featured artists like Pharrell Williams and Currensy. A song from the album, "Still Livin'", was in the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V.

Solo Success and Collaborations (2012–Present)

On December 11, 2012, Gibbs shared that he was no longer with Young Jeezy's CTE label. He explained that there were no problems between them. On May 27, 2013, Freddie Gibbs announced his first album. It was called ESGN (Evil Seeds Grow Naturally). It was released on June 20, 2013, through his own label.

In September 2013, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib released Deeper. This was the last EP before their album Piñata. The album Piñata was released on March 18, 2014. Music critics loved the album. It reached number 39 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

On July 1, 2014, Gibbs, Young Thug, and ASAP Ferg released a song called "Old English". This song became very popular. In October 2014, Gibbs and Madlib released another EP, Knicks (Remix).

Freddie Gibbs also appeared in the TV show Power Book IV: Force in March 2022. He played a character named Cousin Buddy. On October 30, 2024, Gibbs announced his sixth studio album, You Only Die 1nce, which was released on November 1.

Critics often praise Freddie Gibbs for his rapping skills. They say he is very good at different styles of rap. Matthew Ramirez from NPR called him "the eternal technician." Tshepo Mokoena of The Guardian described him as "a classic rapper's rapper." She added that his technique and versatility are amazing.

On November 4, 2014, an incident occurred after Gibbs performed in New York. He was in a car when someone opened fire. Gibbs was not hurt, but two people with him received minor injuries.

In May 2015, Gibbs started a fundraiser called GoFundMe. The goal was to help the School Supply Giveaway of Gary. This program buys school supplies for children in Gary, Indiana. Gibbs explained that growing up in Gary, there were not many chances for kids like him. He said that not having basic school supplies could make kids lose motivation. He wanted to help students get what they needed for a better future.

Gibbs has mentioned that he identifies as a Muslim. He sees it as a personal connection with God.
