Gangsta rap is a type of hip-hop music that started in the mid-1980s. It was first called reality rap. The songs often tell stories about life in big cities. The word gangsta is just a different way to say gangster.
Some of the first artists to make gangsta rap were Schoolly D from Philadelphia and Ice-T from Los Angeles. Later, groups like N.W.A and artists like Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. became very famous. In 1992, with the help of producer Dr. Dre and rapper Snoop Dogg, gangsta rap became popular with many more people. Their music style was called G-funk.
