Schoolly D's Early Life and Music
Schoolly D was born Jesse Bonds Weaver Jr. in West Philadelphia. He grew up in both Philadelphia and Georgia.
In the mid-1980s, Schoolly D started working with DJ Code Money. Their songs talked about real life in cities. He was even featured in a 1986 movie called Big Fun in the Big Town. Later, Schoolly D began to include Afrocentric ideas in his music. This means he brought African culture and history into hip hop, just like another famous rapper, KRS-One.
Schoolly D also made music for many movies by director Abel Ferrara. Some of his songs, like "P.S.K." and "Saturday Night," were used in these films. He also wrote "King of New York" for the movie of the same name. Another song, "Am I Black Enough For You?", was played in a big scene in one of Ferrara's films.
Schoolly D also helped write music for other films. He worked with composer Joe Delia on a song called "The Player." Schoolly D even wrote the entire music score for Ferrara's movie 'R Xmas. In 2006, he worked with Chuck Treece on the music for a science fiction movie called Order of the Quest. His album Funk 'N P**** featured other well-known artists like Public Enemy's Chuck D.
Schoolly D and Animated Shows
Schoolly D is also known for his work on the popular animated TV show Aqua Teen Hunger Force. He created the music and sometimes narrated parts of the show. This show is part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block. He was also a guest on an episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast. He even made a song called "Sharkian Nights" for another Adult Swim show, 12 oz. Mouse. A character in The Rudy and Gogo World Famous Cartoon Show was named Jesse B. Weaver after him.
On December 30, 2022, Schoolly D released his newest album, Cause Schoolly D Is Crazy.
Schoolly D's Influence on Hip Hop
Many people, including famous rapper Ice-T, say that Schoolly D had a big impact on their music. Ice-T is often given credit for starting gangsta rap. In his autobiography, Ice-T talked about how Schoolly D's song "P.S.K." inspired him.
The first record that came out along those lines was Schoolly D's "P.S.K." Then the way that rap flowed was used by me when I made "6 in the Mornin'." The way the words were delivered was the same: "...P.S.K. is makin' that green," "...six in the morning, police at my door." My record didn't sound exactly like "P.S.K.," but I liked the way he was flowing with it. "P.S.K." was talking about Park Side Killers but it was very general. That was the only difference, when Schoolly did it, it was "...one by one, I'm knockin' em out." All he did was represent a gang on his record. I took that and wrote a record about guns, beating people down, and all that with "6 in the Mornin'."
Ice-T explained that Schoolly D's style of rapping, where he told stories about gangs, helped him create his own songs about tough city life. Schoolly D's music helped shape a whole new style of hip hop.
