Electropop is a popular music style. It mixes parts of electronic music with pop sounds. You can think of it as a type of synth-pop. But electropop really focuses on its electronic sounds. This music style started in the 1980s. It became very popular again in the late 2000s.

History

Early 1980s

In the early 1980s, some British artists helped create a new sound. These artists included Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, and The Human League. They used a lot of synthesizers in their music. This made a new style of synth-pop. It had a strong electronic feel.

One of the first songs to show this new style was "Pop Muzik" by M. By 1981, more and more electropop songs were being made. A big hit was "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League. This song helped make "new music" very popular.

21st century

2000s

Britney Spears' album Blackout (2007) helped bring electropop to many listeners. It made the genre much more popular. By 2009, many articles talked about new electropop stars. The genre was becoming very well-known.

The Sound of 2009 poll asked music experts about new artists. Ten out of the top fifteen artists were electropop. Lady Gaga became very successful starting in 2008. Her first album was The Fame. Music writer Simon Reynolds said that Lady Gaga's style came from electroclash. But her music was not exactly like 1980s electroclash.

In 2009, The Guardian newspaper wrote about music trends. James Oldham, who worked at A&M Records, said that record companies were looking for electronic music. They were not signing many new bands.

2010s

Ellie Goulding became one of the most famous artists in modern electropop music.

Electropop music became even more popular in the 2010s. Artists like Avicii, Lady Gaga, Calvin Harris, and Rihanna had big hits.

One of the most successful electropop artists was Ellie Goulding. She became known in the United Kingdom in 2009. Her song "Starry Eyed" was a hit. It was on her first album, Lights. This album mixed folk music with electronic sounds, called folktronica.

Goulding won the BBC Sound of 2010 award. She also won the Critics Choice Brit Award. Her song "Lights" became a "sleeper-hit." This means it slowly became popular over time. It was a pop song with electronic beats.

Her second album, Halcyon, showed a change in her music. She mixed folk and electronic sounds even more. She also used more pop sounds. The re-release, Halcyon Days, made her a top electropop artist. She worked with many electronic music acts.

After 2016, Goulding took a break for five years. But she still released successful songs. At the end of the 2010s, she was named Artist of the Decade. This was by the Variety Hitmakers Awards. Billboard magazine also said she was one of the most successful artists of the 2010s.

Many other electropop artists also became popular in the 2010s. These included Sofi Tukker, Lykke Li, CHVRCHES, Icona Pop, and Troye Sivan.

Korean pop music, or K-pop, also uses a lot of electropop sounds. Many K-pop groups, like Super Junior and Girls' Generation, are influenced by it.

2020s

Some new artists are leading electropop in the 2020s. These include Slayyyter and Sigrid. Billie Eilish also became very popular at the end of the last decade. She has received a lot of praise for her music. Kenneth Womack said that Eilish is the "queen of electropop." This was after her hit album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?.
