The Sound of... is a yearly music poll run by the BBC. Music experts and critics vote to find the most exciting new music artists. It started in 2003 on the BBC News website. Now, it's a big event covered by BBC radio, TV, and online.
Each December, a list of 10 promising artists is announced. This is called the "longlist." In January, they announce the top five artists and the overall winner. Winning this award can help new artists become very famous.

How the Poll Works
Each year, over 100 music critics, editors, and radio hosts vote. They pick the artists they think will be big stars in the coming year.
In 2009, the BBC started publishing a longlist of 15 artists. This helps fans see who the experts are watching. Later, they narrowed it down to 10 artists for the longlist.
Winning the "Sound of..." poll can really boost an artist's career. Many winners have gone on to have number one albums and hit songs. For example, Ellie Goulding won in 2010. Her first album, Lights, became a huge success.
In 2019, Octavian became the first rapper to win since 50 Cent in 2003. He was also the first winner in a long time not signed with Universal Music Group. This shows the poll can highlight artists from different music companies.
The most recent winners, The Last Dinner Party, were announced in January 2024. They were chosen by famous musicians like Florence Welch.
