Early Life and Education
Mabel Alabama-Pearl McVey was born on February 19, 1996, in Alhaurín el Grande, Spain. She is the youngest child of music producer Cameron McVey and singer Neneh Cherry. Her family moved back to Notting Hill, London, when she was two years old.
Mabel learned to read by herself at age four using phonetics and audiobooks. She sometimes felt anxious because she was sensitive to her surroundings. Her parents encouraged her to express herself through music and writing in a journal. The next year, she learned piano and wrote her first song.
To help with her anxiety, her family moved to Sweden when she was eight. They lived in her mother's home near Hässleholm and later moved to Stockholm in 2004. Mabel attended an international school and then Kulturama, a school focused on arts like music and design.
At 15, Mabel joined Rytmus Musikergymnasiet, a music high school in Stockholm. She studied songwriting, production, and music theory for three years. She enjoyed writing R&B songs on the piano.
