Mabel's Early Life and Family

Mabel was born in Alhaurín el Grande, Spain, on February 19, 1996. She is the youngest child of music producer Cameron McVey and singer Neneh Cherry. Her family is full of musicians! Her step-grandfather, Don Cherry, was a jazz musician. Her aunt, Titiyo, and uncle, Eagle-Eye Cherry, are also singers. Mabel's sister, Tyson, and half-siblings, Naima and Marlon Roudette, are also singers.

When Mabel was two, her family moved to Notting Hill, London, England. At age four, she taught herself to read. However, she also started to feel anxious and was bullied because of her background. Her parents encouraged her to use music and writing to express herself. The next year, she learned piano and wrote her first song.

To help with her anxiety, her family moved to Sweden when she was eight. They lived in the countryside near Hässleholm and later moved to Stockholm. Mabel went to an international school and then to Kulturama, a school focused on music and arts. When she was 15, she attended Rytmus Musikergymnasiet, a music high school, where she studied songwriting and music theory for three years.
