The BRIT Awards (often called the BRITs) are big annual music awards in the UK. They are given out by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) to celebrate amazing achievements in popular music. The name "BRIT" first came from "British" or "Britannia". Later, it became a cool way to say British Record Industry Trusts Show. The first awards show was in 1977. It became an annual event in 1982. Since 1989, they have been known as The BRIT Awards. Mastercard has been a main sponsor for a long time. There used to be a similar awards show for classical music called the Classic BRIT Awards.
The BRIT Awards are the most famous music awards in the UK. They have had many memorable moments in British culture. These include Freddie Mercury's last public appearance and Jarvis Cocker's protest during a performance. There was also a big rivalry between the bands Oasis and Blur. Geri Halliwell from the Spice Girls wore her famous Union Jack dress. These exciting moments mostly happened in the 1990s. Back then, the show was known for being a bit wild and full of surprises. People sometimes say it has become more organized and less edgy since then.
The BRIT Awards were shown live on TV until 1989. That year, the show, hosted by Samantha Fox and Mick Fleetwood, had some problems. From 1990 to 2006, the show was recorded and shown the next night. In 2007, The BRIT Awards went back to being live on ITV. This happened on February 14th. That year, comedian Russell Brand hosted. Some awards like British Rock Act and British Pop Act were removed. The Earls Court in London was the venue for the last time in 2010. Since 2011, The BRIT Awards have been held at the O2 Arena in London.
The award given to winners is a statuette. It shows Britannia, who is a female symbol of Britain. Since 2011, famous British artists and designers have redesigned the statuette each year. Some of these artists include Vivienne Westwood, Damien Hirst, and Tracey Emin.
Robbie Williams has won the most BRIT Awards. He has 13 as a solo artist and five more with his band Take That. The girl group Little Mix made history in 2021. They were the first female group to win a specific award in 43 years. In 2024, singer-songwriter Raye broke a record. She got seven nominations in one year, which is the most for any artist.
The BRIT Awards Ceremonies

The very first awards ceremony was in 1977. It was called "The BRITish Record Industry BRITannia Awards." This event celebrated Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. Thames Television showed it on TV. The awards have been held every year since 1982.
How the BRITs are Broadcast
The 1988 BPI Awards was the first show to be broadcast live on TV. Before that, the BBC had shown the ceremony since 1985. The shows from 1982 to 1984 were not on TV. The BBC kept showing the renamed BRIT Awards. They were live in 1989 and pre-recorded from 1990 to 1992. ITV has broadcast the awards since 1993. They were pre-recorded until 2006 and live from 2007 onwards. BBC Radio 1 has covered the backstage action on radio since 2008.
The Launch Show
For many years, ITV has shown a special launch show in January. It's called The BRITs Are Coming. This show announces some of the artists nominated for the awards. Famous hosts have included Jonathan Ross and Kate Thornton.
The show returned in 2013 after a long break. Nick Grimshaw hosted it from the Savoy Hotel in London. He also hosted in 2014. Later hosts included Reggie Yates and Laura Whitmore. Emma Willis hosted in 2017 and 2018. In 2018, it was broadcast live for the first time. Clara Amfo hosted in 2019, and Alice Levine in 2020. Grimshaw hosted again in 2021 with singer Griff. The December 2021 show was hosted by Amfo and Maya Jama.
The 2023 show happened on February 11th. It was the first time it was held on a weekend. The nominees for 2023 were announced online. Jack Saunders and Vick Hope shared them on January 12th, 2023. Other famous people like Tom Daley and Jill Scott also announced nominees on their social media. The launch show came back in January 2024. It was renamed Bring on The BRITs. This show was live-streamed online as part of a new partnership with Meta. Siân Welby hosted the 2025 launch show using the same format.

Fan voting was stopped after 2019 but brought back in 2022.
